Can one of our Canadian members tell me what this pin represents?

It was my mother's, but she can't remember what exactly it was for. Anyone know? (romcat.... )

So...nobody knows?

I'm sure I've seen this somewhere, I just can't remember where.

I took a stab at Google Guesswork, but didn't find anything. 'Course I'm from down south, wouldn't necessarily know all the appropriate cultural keywords.

That is a really neat icon, I love the design. It even seems as if it coincided with or inspired Tyco's Canadiana stuff in some way.

Does the edge or backside of the button have any sort of copyright or date or manufacturing info? Usually you'll find that on the edge of the paper where it folds around the rim to be crimped. Could provide a clue. Other than that I got nothin'.

There is only one word on the whole pin, and it's on the crimped edge:

"SKEMO"

Time for Google to figure this one out for me!

As I suspected, Skemo is just a long forgotten manufacturer of little Canadian knick-knacks, like flags, scarves, and of course pins.

There were two other railroad pins in the box, maybe they will help.

Oh, and apparently there is a company named Skemo that makes sandals. I doubt there is any connection between the two.

As for the Cape Breton Steam Railway, it was a tourist line created in 1973 by DEVCO. They had to shut down the expansive mining industry in Cape Breton, and soon the economy was suffering. To boost it, DEVCO sought out any remaining steam locomotives, and ran them on the abandoned rail lines.
However, there was little interest, and the line closed in just a few years.

The only website that mentions it in any detail is here:
http://mydadstrains.blogspot.com/2008/01/cape-breton-steam-railway.html

A bit LOT about locomotive #42, it was leased to the Cape Breton Steam Railway by Mr. Robert Tibbett. He owned a paint company not far from my house, and would ship the paint out by rail.

Tibbett's Paint today...

In fact, one of the company's ads featured him riding one of several small steam locomotives he had bought when local mining operations switched to diesel power.
Locomotive #42 still survives today in the hands of the Museum of Industry, which is also very close to where I live. You can actually climb inside the cab and ring the bell, which is the first thing every child does there!

Class dismissed...

The tracks are abandoned, you might get away with it...but actually the police station is right at the end of the road!
