| CFK, by "Hi-F," are you referring to the rubber-band drive units? If I recall, Athearn only had one model of a high-hood Geep, and I can't remember if they were labelled 7's or 9's. Are you looking for rubber band replacements, or some other part? I'm not sure what Athearn has in its current line for Geeps, but of course that would be a totally different animal. By the way---totally unrelated--I've been doing some reading on the "Black 5's." Where did that moniker come from?

The Athearn GP9 was misslabled and is actually a GP7. They may be the same parts, as far as I know there was only one shell with minor changes through the years. I have some part sheets for the older GP9, what is the part you need? I can see if the current Athearn part number is the same.

I have always known that the Athearn offering was a GP-9. Now, when reproducing one for the Great Northern, the number #707 is actually #'d for a GP-5. HI-FI, as in the GP-9, FP7's, RDC's, Hustlers, SW-7.. those rocket start-n-stop rubber band drives, YAHHOOO!!!
Later on, the FP-7's were rubberbandless and a menial worm gear was in its place and also weighted with two individual weight-sets that fit right over each truck assembly... I think they were labeled as HI-Power Drives...
Then, with the continued use of metal trucks, a greater one piece metal weight was instituted, with "Flywheel" drive... called "SUPER POWER" drive...
Interesting about Athearn was the interchangeable gears and wheels with their other diesel locomotives.
and, now for my next trick...
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

morning all thanks for replies, Ray i need the bands, and the air tanks, and if possible the standard coupling covers the black u shaped plastic ones that push fit ken adams, the real reason for their name was 3 fold,1 they were class 5 power rated, also they had the number block 5000 onwards, and were always black pre nationalisation except for 4 which were given names of scotish regiments, and appeared in various liveries ayrshire yeomanry for 1 ken

Custom painted GP9s. Athearn GP9s were custom painted by other concerns. One was Collectors Corner. Here are two. 7151 I am sure is Collectors corner because I have one boxed. 7152 is done slightly different and maybe also. If not proably Bev-Bel or Branchline.

The Athearn GP9. Here is a Bev-Bel done GP9 which I will call a GP9 because that is what it is. Athearn released a Phase 1 GP-9 which looked identical to a GP-7. When EMD first released it's GP9 they used a up powered frame in a GP7 body. Changes after this were rapid. The Phase two had the same fan arangement as the GP7 but different side louvers. The final GP9's Ph 3 were made with the same louvers as the phase 2 and 2 larger roof fans sets like the GP18's. The third fan is for the dynamic breaks. I'll post photos of these differences as I have some LLP2000 locos of these types.
This is a GP-9 Phase 1 with dynamic breaks and cold weather hatch.

This is a GP-7

This is a GP-9 phase 1 with dynamic breaks

This is a GP-9 phase 2 with dynamic breaks

this is a GP-9 phase 3 with dynamic breaks

The phase stuff was coined by railfans, EMD made them as a GP7 or GP9 and the spotting features were just production changes.
Athearn's GP7/9 was the same basic shell from when it came out until recently. It was even cloned by Lionel for theirs and Cox for their low-hood version which ended up being a Walthers Trainline engine.
Athearn Hi-F belts are pretty much all the same, and the Hi-F trucks and components all interchange. I'm not sure the early ones used the plastic coupler covers, though, a lot of them used screw-on covers of some sort through the early 60s. The air tanks will interchange though. Just like EMD, they made minor changes here and there.
