Those were sold by Life/Like and maybe Model Power.
I rebuilt one into a pretty nice loco.

You have a model of an Alco RS-11. It has quite a history. The model first appeared from Varney with truck mounted motor and only 4 wheel drive. Life-Like picks the model up when Varney died. Life-Like did not alter the model in any way from the original.

At some point, Mehano makes a huge change in the mechanism. Gone is the single power truck. Now the model comes with all wheel drive and a 3 pole open frame motor mounted above the fuel tank. Model Power imported this version until a couple years ago. I do not know if anyone is still importing it at this time.

As Ray shows, with a bit of work, you can make a very nice loco from this model. That assumes you start with a later model with all wheel drive. The power truck CAN be upgraded, but it ain't as easy to do. The shell is nice and really just needs to have the rails replaced to produce a good looking model. You might also want to remove the steam generator equipment on the roof of the short hood. Only a few RS-11s had that item.

Hey Ray,

Very sharp looking model! Do you know if any RS-11s actually came from Alco with a steam generator? I've only found photos of RS-32s with the generators. If the RS-11s had the generator, do you have a photo showing a split fuel/water tank?

Did you scratch build the fuel tank or swipe it from somewhere else?

Hey Pat,

Your loco is from Model Power. Looking at it, I can see it has all wheel drive. The mechanism is very easy to improve. You are really only limited by funds. You can add a new motor, flywheels etc. Ebay can provide a good selection of new, can motors for only a few bucks. But what your engine really needs is electrical pick-up. Yours only picks up current from 4 wheels. Add pick up to the other 4 wheels and it will run much better. Adding a little extra weight will help some as well.

Also, I don't believe the Model Power RS-11 is a "collectible". They are fairly cheap on ebay. I've bought nice ones to rebuild for $10 +s/h. Just be careful to NOT buy an earlier model with the power truck.

Bahh, I'm sure he would tell you to stay away from Tyco as well! Where's the fun in NOT fixing your locos every other week?

A lot of engines share key drive components from those; I just picked up a beat Lehigh Valley example to rebuild because I'm fairly sure it's one of the rarer roadnames on these.

One junker with pickup wipers is all that's needed to add pickups to all 4 wheels with no modifications - just need to unsolder some wires and replace them to add the wipers to the trucks on this. You can get them from any of the 8-wheel drive Mehano engines - the GP18, RS2 and some versions of C415 or FM C-liner all will do it.
