I recently found a train set of mine I had when I was 8 years old. Now I am 38. It has been in my parents attic behind years of "junk". Anyway my father told me he thinks the power pack is bad on it. I have hooked it up and got no response as well. I really want to get this fun hobby going again and especially this set. I am going to give as much detail as I can. Any advise, suggestions and help in any form will be greatly appreciated. I will try to have some photo in the next few days to post as well. Feel free to send me an e-mail as well. Thanks!!

I jumped the gun a litte as I forgot the information. Here it is.
The locamotive in the instruction is refered to a HO 0-8-0 locomotive. The paint scheme Blue and SIlver with 1060 Midnight Special on it. I have a 8 wheel Caboose 327-28. The only date I found on anything was on a Sante Fe car box, 1978. I assume all is from the same time. There are 13 cars in all. The power pack is a model 899B. Again, any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Your set sounds like a standard Midnight Special train set that had some cars added. This set was sold around that mid-late 70's timeframe. The instruction sheet is a generic one included all sets because Tyco was too cheap to make them specific. 0-8-0 would be a steam engine, but you instead have a "Sharknose" Diesel with the standard "Powertorque" drive of the time.

As for testing:

You should know that the Powertorque engines are rather infamous and yours may in fact not work. But in your case the best way to tell for sure is to test the powerpack first. You can use a test bulb or a multimeter (or another known good HO train engine if you have one). Connect it to the DC terminals on the pack and turn it on, see what happens (the trains/track run on DC power ONLY).

If the pack is bad, don't waste your time with the engine yet until you replace the pack. Most any powerpack you could get would work, just make sure it is recommended for HO and/or N scale.

If the pack is good, then your task goes to troubleshooting the engine. There are several topics here that will help, otherwise it's too big a topic to tackle right here for the moment, without knowing more info. Get back to us and we'll see where it goes.

Good Luck and welcome aboard!
