I brought some locomotives to fix for my history teacher home over the weekend. Nothing remarkable, a cheap ol' Bachmann F-unit, Mehano steam loco...but in return for fixing these, he said I could keep a Chattanooga 2-8-0 he had wasting away in a junk box.

I forgot to take some pics of the loco before disassembly, but here's some of the bits and pieces.

It's a sorry wreck right now, but I hope to get it running well, or at least as good as a "Power-Pork" will allow.

The front of the boiler is missing. The only other missing pieces are one of the truck sideframe assemblies for the tender, and the axle it held in place.

Ahh, normally I despise the Power-Torque motor, but I can't help but feel a little bit sorry for this one. Just a little.

He also let me have the matching caboose, which also needs some work. Nothing major, just a matter of replacing the trucks, handrails and chimney.

I hope I'll have an engine that at least runs soon. Then I'll worry about finding things like the front of the boiler.
Oddly, this loco has all the traction tires in place, and none of them have rotted or cracked. Must be a fairly recent job. I've never run into an older engine like this with a full, good set of traction tires.

More pictures and maybe even a video soon to come...

EDIT:Sorry, I'm too used to reading about the 0-8-0. This is in fact a 2-8-0.

Look forward to your progress, the older ones with full valve gear and a pilot truck are my favorite. I also like that variant of caboose as it looks the more "prototypical" of the ones offered.

Well it's running now. Terribly for the moment, I guess there's still some bugs to work out.

The smoke generator is a lot of fun, but I can't get it to work inside the loco. I tested it on it's own and it worked great.

Also, the motor only seems to get power when the wheels are at a certain position...when they spin the headlight flickers constantly.

At least the motor runs well. I'll get the rest of it working right soon!

Boy, look at all of that gunk on the commutator!

It doesn't look too bad, Matt. I've seen worse. Just be careful with the boiler. Some get brittle and begin to crack like that, either due to the original Tyco smoke fluid, or someone using something like 3-In-1 in them that attacks the plastic. The missing chunk should be an easy repair with some putty. Sounds like the wheels need a good scrubbing with a brass brush.

That gunk was pretty oily, so a lot of it simply wiped off. I still cleaned and polished it afterwards though.

In behind the gears was worse in terms of gunk build-up. I tried a new way of cleaning out the stuff on instinct, and it worked extremely well. I dipped an old toothbrush in some paint thinner and scrubbed away.

Also, many of the little copper wires on the armature had snapped, so I needed to do some precision soldering!

Wow, that is some precise soldering! Those windings are very thin. Nice job.

Just be careful with the paint thinner. Most of that stuff will attack the plastic gears. Not sure if Testors will, but I stick with 90% alcohol or the contact cleaner I mentioned on another thread for degreasing.

I cleaned the gears seperately, with a clean rag. I only cleaned the metal parts with the paint thinner.

Well, the 2-8-0 is running pretty good now. It can't pull a heck of a lot, but it does run fairly smooth.

Here's a silly little video...
