Cool engines Frank. I think I like it in the maroon scheme a little better. Did the PRR have those in real life?

When did they put these Geeps on GE U-Boat trucks? I've never seen that before. The sideframes and horn look diecast, so I take it this was one of their early versions. Were they Roco drives as well?

OK GIC, that's one odd-looking NP geep!
For starters, it's running on the frame and AAR trucks of the Virginian Rectifier. (Look at the Rectifier pics above - notice how from the walkway down, they're identical to the GP9 shell?)
It's definitely an Athearn knock-off, but what's up with that way-too-tall cab? The 1970s Lionel GP9 cab is undersized compared to the Athearn shell; this one is markedly oversized even though both shells seem to have a molded-on cab unlike the Athearn shell.
And is yours all original or has it been damaged somewhat? The front pilot is closed a la the Athearn, but the rear is open and looks like it accomodates a swinging coupler. Weird design.
Something I've learned from Lionel HO - the Athearn GP9 running gear will breathe new life into an old Lionel loco. The Lionel GP9, Rectifier, and U18B all fit on the same frame, which - coincidentally enough - matches the dimensions of the Athearn Geep. If you're not worried about originality, pitch the Lionel and especially the Kader drive and replace it with the Athearn.
I give the same advice to people with a Cox or Model Power GP9 lownose (seeing as how these shells are also Athearn knockoffs).
A Walthers GP9M drive will also fit, for the same reasons.

The maroon paint is factory done by Lionel. The light green is done by me. Pennys didn't have E33s. They purchased the more powerfull E44s. The light green one came out of my parts box. It has a Athearn GP7 drive and a tyco pentagraph. I still have another E33 body. Maybe I'll make another Pennsy E33. frank

If I get one that has a missing spring, I just break the whole truck down, and if I have enough of them, I use them as junk loads for gondolas. BTW, another item that is just as tricky, if not more tricky, that's putting springs into the knuckle couplers, like the Kadee No. 5s and so forth.

Hey toptrain! I have one of these Lionel HO Pacifics that needs a motor for it. What type of can motor would work for this engine and how much modification is involved? I'm not sure what number it is, but I think it is either a 0635 or 0636. Next time I'm out at the farm, I'll look at it to see. I would like to see this engine run.

I just bought one of the Lionel Hustlers on Ebay on Sunday, a blue one, those things are hard to get under $20! And the AEC ( Atomic Energy Commision ) 0056 and 0057 Hustlers, OMG, I saw one mint in a box sell for $150+ this past weekend ! Yikes! It's white and red.
I have the radioactive waste car, in HO, would be nice to get the AEC Hustler, but at those inflated prices, I"m not bidding. Too rich for my bank account right now.
Seen a few of the gold 50th engines on Ebay, some in lots, and others by themselves. Should look for them, they're out there and not just a few, from the auctions I've seen in the past week. And not expensive, either, for the most part.

Hey Gremlin Man:
A couple years ago I saw on ebay a 1958 or 9 Hustler AEC unit on a base with a LH #4 switch from Lionel that said "Make the Switch to NBC" commemorating the NBC affiliates going national in that year for wait for it....
$10,000.00 YUP, that was TEN-THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! The comma and deciaml are in the right places...

Gareth, didn't that NBC Hustler (insert your own joke here ) go for $22,000? That's the final bid that sticks in my head. That auction appealed to a number of different types of collectors, not just us train guys.

Hi Guys. I printed out a copy of that auction. Nelson is right. It sold for $22,009.09. on 6/10/07. I have all the pictures that were posted for it. That had to be the most any HO item ever sold for on ebay, have not seen anything even close Carl

Recently Another of the AEC WNBC Husky was sold on eBay. The engine was in very poor condition (Look at the pictures) and the winning bidder paid $500. Also the winning bidder was the same guy that paid $22,009.09 In 2007. I guess he wants to cornor the market no matter what the condition.. Carl

Does anyone know where I can get a "bottom" plate for my Lionel HO Erie Centercab? It's the same one used by the Husky..

Hi Gareth. The plate is what makes or breaks the value. Most of them Break and go missing with age. I have made a cover from styrene. So that nothing gets into the motor. But, the collectors look for the original cover. There have been times when I would purchase a beater. Just to get the cover. Carl

Hi V-Ho:
Yeah would like to complete an otherwise pristine Erie Center-cab. Glad I bought it, just didn't realize how critical the bottom cover was....
Like you I'll probably buy a rat to get the cover. Oh, well....

I like this thread, and I like the Lionel HO equipment. But some of the prices people pay are ridiculous. I don't think most people....at least around here....bother to look at who manufactured HO equipment. At every flea market I go to it's all lumped in together and treated like junk, unlike the "real" Lionel in O scale, which they think is worth its weight in gold. Anybody else see this? Even the train shows around here sell HO cheap.

Not in the northern Virginia area. Any unusual HO is usually marked up at train shows, the guys know their stuff around here. There's some "cheap" HO, but not like $1-2 apiece. Usually 3-6 minimum...and the opposite is true at the local Fleas, often they want $10-20 for a Tyco car, they think they're gold like Lionel because they're "trains". Even after being banged up and the boxes are junk and moldy, you can't get'em down much sometimes. I usually don't get deals at Fleas, even if I find them, because they're marked up and won't drop the prices. Occasionally I find some deals, but it's not often. I'll get better deals from my club buddy who's cleaning out his shed of stuff, I intend to go by on Friday and maybe buy his entire Tyco junk box collection. We'll see. I've got some stuff he wants too. :) Most of my great deals come thru Ebay from sellers who don't know what they have, and list it without good descriptions, so finding them is luck as far as the search goes ( I sort thru lot listings, occasionally you get a good piece when they have bad pictures and no good descriptions, but you can see it's a Lionel Hustler or a Boxcab by Roundhouse ).

Merry Xmas to all!!!! Hey GiC....I was looking around at U-18 stuff and came across your geeps... The tri-color Chessie GP looks like it has Bachmann trucks...the one pc molded kind...you drop in the axles and go...the GM 50 looks to have metal sideframes, and the NP has AAR type B trucks...and the roof of that NP cab is much higher than the others...some of the air tanks differ as well...is the NP an older unit????

First off let me say Im not really a Lionel collector - however I'm very intrigued by the things Athearn made for them in 1958-59 as well as by the things either tooled or copied from them. That said the Husky is a favorite of mine since the Athearn Hustler is also one of my all time favorite Yellow/Blue box kit era locos. I just got this AEC Husky - complete with entire train set (box, individual boxes for each piece etc). I havent seen a Husky this mint before - not a scratch on it, clean, Lionel plate on bottom is intact and in mint condition. Came with complete box/insert and instruction sheet. I havent test run it yet. Caboose pictured with it needed a few minor little things - and still needs brakewheels. Larry
