Frank,
I have the 0625, which doesn't have the smoke or whistle. That long haul tender dwarfs the loco. Obviously they needed the room.
Mine had the cracked nylon axle gear, but I finally tracked down a replacement wheelset. If anyone needs a set of drivers for these with a brass gear, I still have a bunch of them.

Lionel pacifics and 0-6-0 unlike other LIONEL steam engines the 0-4-0 and the 2-4-2 of that era has a direct gear drive. If the gears are lined up properly and oiled it does run well. frank

Yup, Frank, that's the one. If it's like mine it has plastic spur gears with huge teeth that sound like a coffee grinder no matter how well you lube it. I'm not sure if they used better gearing in earlier versions. My instruction sheet says 1962.

With lionel, it seams they made three types. The ones with just a light. 0625L. This looks a lot like the John English pacific. Lionel has the belpare fire box and is made of plastic. It added the Belpair fire box to alow the use of Lionels standard HO motor. John English is all die cast.
Here is a John English Pacific I painted for the Reading
Then lionel added smoke. 0635, 0636. Then a whistling sound tender was added. 0645, 0646.

Hey Guys:
I have one of those. have to check which one. It runs ok, but slips because of the porly adjusted trailing truck lifting the drivers I believe...
I'll check the number on the cab later today....

Hey there Toptrain, I have a question for you,and please don't take it the wrong way. Why do you almost always edit your posts? I mean every post in this thread has been edited by you. Everytime I see what I think is a new post, and open the thread, what I see is that you have edited something. I find that kind of annoying, not terribly so, just kinda. Nice Lionel equipment you have there by the way.

Carl: In life I never get it right the first time. Something is spelt wrong. Something just doesn't read right. Maybe I found out something elese. Maybe I have a better photo. Maybe a question caused a rewrite. Carl I would like to get it right the first time every time but it doesn't happen that way. frank Another edit. With this and a few other threads I have been making here and other places, I have indexed the photos in the thread. To help find them I put post numbers on the threads I could edit. You can see it in the first thread here in Lionel HO. When a person opens this thread and is looking for a certan piece, the index helps locate the photo. Especialy with Lionel. With Lionel everything is numbers.

Greenberg's Guide to Lionel-HO Volume 1 1957-1966 calls the Erie Center Cab a GE 44-Ton Switcher. Cataloged in 1961, as a separate release and in Lionel set 5751. Returned in '62, separately and in set 14013. The guide states the Erie is, "rarest of all small units."

Hey TopTrain, I enjoyed the photo's you posted in this thread. It's nice to see other vintage stuff besides TYCO. I really like the steamers. Funny thing is that if the HO scale boxes were'nt in the background on that 0645 steamer I would have thought it was 027. It has that Lionel look to it even for an HO scale locomotive. I think the wheels is what throws it off. Any idea whatever happened to their molds for these? I know Bachmann got the GS-4,and GP-30 molds....

Alex; As far as I know Lionel still has there dies for that late 1950s to late 1960s HO train line. It is proably under some boxes in a warehouse somewhere. The dies for the steamengines and some of the cars were form a aquasistion of the John English line of HO trains. frank

This may have been covered, but are the Lionel HO locomotives marked as being Lionel? The pictures look just like a couple I have and think are Athearns. I'm talking about the GP7's. I've got an ATSF and MoPac that look similar to the pictures above, but I think they're Athearn..especially the ATSF since it's got the rubber band drive. How do I know a Lionel HO when I see it?

lionel did put their name on everything they sold in one way or another. On the GP7 diesels I show. both bodies tho similiar in appearance are constructed different. The easest way to know if it is lionel is on the Athearn/Globe the cab is removalable. The lionel has the cab and body as one piece. Both Lionel GPs were clearly marked on the bottom Lionel. frank

I have that Chessie GP7, and another in the standard tri-color scheme (which is part of a complete uncataloged Chessie Freight set with map, iron-on, history pamphlet and other goodies). My Gold one does not have the stock# on the battery box though, IIRC (nor does it have half the front pilot, boo). I know there were a few variants like this.
The only other Lionel loco I have is a Northern Pacific GP7, with an error. They heat-stamped two different road numbers on the long hood, one right over the other. The embossings are both legible but the gold foil only registers one number. Can't remember what it is at the moment., maybe "603/607" or something like that. I've been given conflicting advice about this unit: some say it is a very rare / valuable unit, others say it's pretty common. I just like the paint scheme. And the drive is pretty cool... uses what looks like a giant spring for a rubber band, and the biggest light bulb I've ever seen in an HO car or loco!

Here are my Lionel GP9's:
#5610, Chessie Tri-color. The author of the Greenberg Guide to Lionel HO Vol. 2 *HATES* this locomotive, and singled it out as an example of everything wrong with Fundimensions Lionel... but I don't think it's that bad. Has the terrible first-gen Kadercake but so did a bunch of their stuff (including all the rest of the #56XX GP9s). The paint looks nice... much better than anything Tyco did for Chessie until the SD24, and nowhere near as comically thick as that "American Flyer" engine TopTrain posted above!.
Chessie Gold, without the stock# on the frame. I much prefer it this way. Sadly, mine is a wreck. If anyone has a junk shell (with an intact rear pilot) and/or a spare trcuk for the GE drive, let me know?
Finally, my enigma loco:
Look closely at the engineer's side (second picture) and you'll see the error I was talking about. They stamped "0597" first, then "0593" on top of that. The Northen Pacific herald was paritally double-stamped as well! Brakeman's side does not have these problems. I can;t remember what the Greenberg Guide Vol. 1 had to say about this... I think they said it was rare, but they one they showed was different somehow? I don't have a copy of the book. And even if I did, we know how out-of-date those can get...

Okay - I need that Chessie Golden Anniversary loco now.
My wife is a Chessie NUT - she LITERALLY has an 18 year old cat named Chessie that is on loan to her mom. Her dad found Chessie at the railroad yard (CSX by then I think) where he worked. Chessie is sort of known for being FEARLESS - she will bite the tires of the car when it pulls in the driveway. She had her front paw run over by a train (side) and has been missing the right two toes of that foot almost all of her life as a result. Likely swiping at a locomotive knowing her.
At least I'll be HAPPY being broke....
Anyone has one of those for sale, please let me know. I like it with the Athearn rails, btw.- I assume they are solid brass to match?
