Tragedy has struck in my family. My wifes Cousins teen age son was waliking the tracks home from school on monday afternoo n--Nov10th2008 -- around 3:30 pm est. He was listening to his I pod/MP3 palyer at full volume as a southbound NS train approached from behind him which was sounding horn and bell. He was struck and killed instantly. His death has brought to local officials a warning to everyone who jogs walks etc about personal electronic devices which dominate us today verses my generation growing up in the 80's. The message is to always be aware of surroundings when using I=pods MP3 and other personal electronic devices.May sound stupid to some--but the distractions are real.

My condolences to you and your family. It's a horrible tragedy.

Unfortunately mini electronic devices are are leading to more of this sort of thing. Doctors are seeing more head injured due to people walking into poles while texting, and I heard about a teenage girl a few months back who stepped right in front of a train while using her cell phone. I drove past a kid riding a skateboard when I went to vote who was looking down at his Gameboy, and he never looked up. I gave him a wide berth.

Then there was the engineer texting his friends who missed the red signal and caused that California wreck.

Sorry to hear about your loss. A very needless tragedy.

Just a couple of years ago, when I was in middle school, 100+ kids would cross the tracks in town to go home.
Well, there was a train coming in one day, and one guy had his MP3 player blaring.
He did not hear the train at all, and was very lucky to have seen it when he did. I saw the plow come within a few feet of him.
Of course, there was a school-wide assembly on railroad safety only a few days later.

At his church--First Freewill Baptist-- wed night -- over 200 youth attended in memory of him and 10 were saved. There were over 1500 hundred people total for the viewing.

back, before cd's were invented, I was playing my Sony Walkman, cassette player, while walking on the BN double track mainline, northbound track, night time... seemed that I was casting a shadow, then suddenly my shadow shortened up quickly...
I took three steps to the left, it missed me by one second and two feet.

I am not saying that he did it purposely, but how was he emotionally?

Another factor of condolences goes to the Engineer and Conductor.
People usually forget about the horror they go through. They cannot stop the trains in time. The both of those employees are required to go through "Trauma" courses when this sort of tradegy occurs.

I knew I would have been selfish if I decided to stay in the path.

Again, I am not insinuating a suicide.

If this offends anyone, I will remove it as soon as I am given the word.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Zeb--emotionally he was fine--I should have noted that he had hearing loss in one ear which was soon to be corrected by surgery. The IPod/MP3 player ear piece was in his good ear. This is why he did not hear the train. Zeb--Thanks also for posting about the engineer and conductor condolences. The family does not blame them as they know that they did try to warn him by sounding the horn and trying to stop before hitting him. No offense by your comment--Brian

Hi Brian:

I'll remember this boy Sunday evening at Khrystian's Rquiem Mass.

I run all the time and I'm constanly amazed at people running especially on the road with iPods in their ears. I usually say hi and either they are very rude or they don't hear my greeting because of how loud their MP3 player is. I can usually hear their music as I run past!

Further to the point there are 3 level crossings in my neighbourhood. It's non-sensical blocking out the world whle you walk and/or run.

I don't understand how he could have been sl close to the tracks? I can see a shortcut by following tracks but not on or adjacent to them. Perhaps the ballasting on the track made walking anywhere but too close very awkward? Do you know the place where he was struck Brian?

Pax Vobiscum,
Gareth

Romcat -- He was walking in the middle of the tracks near the end of a high stone arch trestle in Cramerton NC with his Ipod/Mp3 player at full volume. He had significant hearing loss in the other ear in which he was to soon have corrective surgery to fix... Appreciate your condolences.

G-I-C--Puppyfang--Thank you for your condolences.

TO ALL -- The family appreciates all comments made. His funeral today had over 1500 in attendence. Nearly half of his high school was there including teachers. His funeral was a celebration of his life. His mom did get to speak to the engineer and conductor. She said they were both in distress when they found out his age.

Brian,

That sounds like a very moving ceremony, with quite a turnout. He was obviously well-loved.

Given the circumstances of his untimely death, I just wanted to stress the danger of using earbuds at high volume. A lot of people probably figure that they're safe because they are so small, but because they seal against the outer ear canal they are capable of delivering tremendous air pressure (dB) to the ear drums, and causing very early hearing loss, even deafness. The human ear is a very sensitive instrument, and hasn't evolved to cope with the decibel levels of highly amplified music. The resulting hearing loss is not just an annoyance, it can make it more difficult for someone to detect an oncoming train or vehicle, even when the device is not in use at the time. Music does not need to amplified past the point of pain, so turn it down and enjoy it. You only get one set of ears, and in the dark or in a moment of distraction they may be your only cue of oncoming danger.

Now I'll get off my soapbox.

Hey NP:

Thats a pretty darn good soap box. Cheers. I nerver wear earbuds and mp3 when I'm running as I'm mostly on roads.

I'm often bemused by everyones need to isolate themselves with sound...

Again good soapbox.

Hi Brian,

I will keep your family in my prayers, especially Josh's parents. I truly believe those that did that for me helped. Sometimes I wonder where I've gotten the strength to carry on. God bless.
