Here are several photos of my latest rebuild project to be completed. It is an old AHM SD40 shell and chassie. I replaced the original plastic hand rails with bent brass wire and Athearn stantions. I also replaced the molded on grabs with brass wire ones. The original mechanism was replaced with a new can motor and twin flywheels. I also added more electrical pickups to the trucks.

This last photo is a peek under the hood. The copper plate was mounted to the top of the motor to keep the wires away from the drive line.

Hey,

Really like the paint scheme. Reminds me a bit of the orange and gray that the ICG used in the 1980s for a time.

Amazing how good that old AHM SD40 shell can look with some work. Excellent!

The AHM SD40 has filled in detailed pilots, correct? I know later the IHC examples are opened for swinging talgo trucks. Just wondered if you had to fill in the front and rear pilots?

Tony,

You are right on 2 counts. First the paint scheme is based on the one used by the ICG. Just a lighter grey. Second, I did fill in the pilots and body mounted the couplers and pockets. Sorry, I was a little tired last night when I added the photos.

Mike,

I think these rebuilds are excellent and artistic. I can’t believe you posted them in 2006 and I’m just seeing them now. The first link let me see the NdeM and the GT and the SD. The repowers look professional if not factory. The airbrush work looks perfect.
I really enjoyed these engines!!!!

It's great to see what can be done with these old engines. Well done. And it's nice to see that the links are still working in 2019.

Yes, very well done! I like how you dry brushed the truck side frames and fuel tank to pop out the molded in detail! That's the kind of simple modeling trick that anyone can experiment with that can really improve the appearance of the models we run.
