Thought I'd show a project that I'm having fun with. I have swapped the high nose and moved the trucks closer together to look more like the 425 and 430s. I'm going to make a more proto tank, etc. I cut the "flaps" next to the tank to give truck clearance like the protos. Using MU2 power. Had to grind material off the front truck bogey to move truck backward and lengthen the mounting slot. Drilled the back plate to move truck foward. It runs!
A bad bad pic but you get the idea.

Hi Buddy:
N&W had a C-425HH never was a C-430HH but Alco had planned one on paper though likely only the Suzy-Q, N&W and LIRR would have bought them based on other Alco purchases.
I have a C-425HH in the works. A tiger Valley metal one.

Maybe this pic from railpictures.net will help explain why the trucks were moved closer together.

The fuel tank from the C630 is a fairly close prototypical match and can be adapted to fit:

With the tank so close to the trucks it gives the same "crammed in" appearance of the prototype.

If you look at TopTrain's latest post you see his Altlas 425 in PRR and that is like what I'm doing with the trucks here on my Mantua Tyco Highnose 425/430. I have one in CR. I have made and plan to build tanks for this like on my Mehano 430.
Toptrain's Alco: http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6114#13762 Here's a proto picture: http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=244095&nseq=8
Here's 3 tanks I made and will make for the Mantua. /tyco/forum/uploaded/alco fan/100_1283.jpg

Oh, I didn't realize you wanted a 425. The 430 body shell is not really accurate to pass for one, but yes you are right the standard Mantua/Tyco fuel tank is close enough to a 425. The real 430's I have seen pics of all had the larger "630-ish" tanks.
That's an odd discrepancy come to think of it. As if Tyco had designed a 430 on a 425 frame for some reason. Reason likely being, they figured a way to reuse existing parts (GP20 fuel tank). Kind of clever.

The tanks I posted earlier that I made look prototypical. The trucks are too far apart for the C430 they need to be closer togehter. I think the 430 shell is close enough but too long for a 425. There is a list of things that could be modified, doors and remove items from the roof and add a DB that would make it look more like a 425. If you look at some of the C430 drawings you'll see the Tyco trucks are it the wrong place. That's why I moved them. http://paintshop.railfan.net/images/moldover/c430.html

Ahh I get it now. I did not see the pic of the tanks you made, those look great.
Wasn't trying to seem critical, I thought you were taking a "shortcut" bash and was just offering a quickie-type suggestion.
To be more like a 425, you need to remove the air filter box behind the cab, and shorten the long hood underneath the number boards. Since you have gone so far as to make a custom fuel tank and shorten the wheelbase, I think you shoul dgo for the gusto .
On the other hand, I like one-off plausible-fantasy kitbashes too. There are more one-off / hack-job locomotives in the real world than most people realize.
Either way your loco looks good so far.

I've compared the M-T430 to an Atlas 425 and I see a lenght problem but with Mantua trucks you can't shorten the length once the truck spacing is corrected. The long hood height looks the same.

Here's an updated pic of the 430 shell with some parts removed to help it look more like a 425. The 430 shell was from Brianstyco and the DB casting is from Hypoponera and the high hood is from Outofstorage. "I get by with a little help from my friends.."

I have been working again on my C425 conversion. There are many things I should do to make it more accurate but I think once I sand down the putty I'm going to paint this thing. I had earlier moved the trucks inward to look more like the position of the truck on the prototype. I may fill the pilots and body mount the couplers. The cab on the 425 is much shorter and I'm not sure if I can use the MU2 trucks if I shorten it.

The drawing I was using didn't have a vent where the filter box used to be behind the cab so I filled it in. Then I looked at the link above which I hadn't looked at in over a year and see that example does have a vent. I May leave it as it is, smoothing out the rough spots.

Update .It's running and I'm working on it again. It is supposed to be a high nosed C425 from a Tyco 430 shell. I know its not exact and is too long but I'm operating on the "close-enough" principle that a noted railroad modeler subscribed to. It won't be long hopefully untill it goes to paint. I'm sure you can see some of the changes. I altered the wheel base to look more like the 425 reference photos. Added a C630 nose and removed the air filters behind the cab. Also added a DB and removed another box on the roof and shortened the "tank flaps" next to the fuel tank. I've completed 4 other paint jobs and other projects in the almost 3 years since I started this build. I didn't realize it had been this long.

While I looked at photographs on railpictures.net I didn't read any references about the 425. "But say hello to my little friend" According to the Second Diesel Spotters Guide by Jerry Pinkepank, except for the C430s aftercooler assembly humped up behind the cab (this) distinguishes the unit from the otherwise identical C425. There are other mods that I need to make to the Tyco shell, if I want to get it closer to the actual units like the fuel tank or Hi Adhesion trucks, however I'm not and wasn't planning on being exact just having a nice model and some fun.
