Can anyone confirm the made in Yugoslavia 2-8-2 in pic below is a Mehano, or something else?
The fine stamping under the 3 'A''s pattern says 'RSO NN04'

Also, I want to put traction tyres on 1 set of wheels. Their diameter [of the round surface that contacts the rail, not overall diameter], is 17.75mm. Traction tyres seem to be advertises as Smal/Medium/Large - what would fit these wheels??
Thanks
Tanked

I'd say that's a Mehano, yeah. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that Mehano and IHC are closely related somehow.
All I know is that their steam locos look the exact same.

As for traction tyres, all I know is that you shouldn't use dental rubber bands!

Hi--There is an assortment sold. I would try the larger tire. Look in the Walthers catalog. I will post the numbers later as i have a 09 Walthers catalog.

Added 9-18-08. You can put traction tires on locomotives without grooves. How long it wiil or would work i do not know. You use a smaller size for a tight fit. Your best option may be adding lead weight. A-Line products sells small stick on weight assortments which i have used. Just remember to protect yourself when handling lead and wash hands if handling bare to avoid possible lead poisoning. The same warning appears on the package also.

Wait a minute - I don't think IHC/Mehano steamers use traction tires, aside from the 4-4-0's. Unless there's a groove for them in the wheel tread, they can't be used. You'd have to machine a groove into the wheel tread.

Correct. No groove

& looking at it after the football I realised I would have to take the valve gear off to get them on.
So, forget that idea.
What alternative methods are used to give grip, other than add weight to the engine, which is already solid -, & try & free up the wagon wheels?.
I suspect a couple of them are sticking, which is causing the wheel spinning.
Also, the loco wheels are 'smooth & polished' - can they be lightly sanded??

I know this won't help you much, BUT...

Whenever I have a loco that needs more grip, I just put another locomotive in front of it.

Ahh yes, no need to thank Captain Obvious...

I've got a few Mehano steam engines. They're not the best pullers, but they run smooth. I'm not sure if there's anything you could really do to make it significantly better...making sure all the wheels on the cars turn freely probably would help.
