Hi Fellas, A few years ago my wife purchased a Tyco train set for me from an ad in the local Pennysaver paper. This is a red box set. The set # is T-6997 and includes the following. T224D:1100 Santa Fe F9 Diesel,Blue & Yellow freight scheme T339A:300 Santa Fe 50ft Plug Door Boxcar T312D:249 Rio Grande Stockcar T341B:250 Union Pacific Gondola W/pipe Load T351A:300 Western Maryland Flatcar W/tractors T327J:350 Santa Fe Unlighted Caboose I would like to know when this set was made, and what the value might be,this whole set is in excelent shape and was used very little. As a side note, the artwork on the lid of this set is probably the best I have seen on a train set box. This thing has a real "railroady" look to it,and is most impressive.
In Tyco we trust! Carl T.

Carl,
From the train set's stock number T-6997 we can make an educated guess that it dates to 1969. Red Box Era train sets generally seem to carry the year of release or catalog appearance as the first two digits. For example, looking in TYCO's 1965-66 catalog the train sets all are numbered T6500-series. This continues through the end of the '60s. So, I'd say yours would be a 1969 entry.
Trouble is, there is no T6997 set in the 1969-70 catalog. Though as we all know TYCO was big on doing sets for places like Sears and others and so very many didn't make it into the annual product catalogs.
A close relative might be TYCO's T6902B The Diesel Flyer from the 1969-70 catalog. It featured a Santa Fe F-9A; 50' Box Car; Hopper Car; Skid Flat w/Culvert Pipe; Caboose; and track for a 36"-circle. It sold for $19 without power pack. The same set with a TYCO-PAK was T6922B and it retailed for $26. The "B" on the set denotes ATSF power and Caboose. An "A" on the end of the stock number was the Penn Central example and TYCO also lists a "C" for Canadian National example in that year's catalog.
TYCO's first two digits equals the year of release is tossed out the window and in 1970-71 the train sets begin carrying 7300 and 7200 stock numbers.
I agree that TYCO's box lid artwork is nothing short of frameable! Really nice. The TYCO 1970-71 catalog displays many of these neat box lids and they are all very cool.

Thanks a bunch Tony, You answered a few more questions than I asked about! Like the set numbering system for one. The set has a price sticker from Hoschilds Kohn, an Eastern department store in Downtown Baltimore. The sticker price is $22.50 Thanks again for your help you must have one heck of a catalog collection!
