Hi there! I have an old Tyco set (60's perhaps?) called Blue and Gray Centennial set with civil war figures on the front. The side says "The Grey Train" (1860 series) was priced as $34.98 on box. (funny.. Gray was spelled differently on box in 2 places :0) The train amazingly enough has never been used. Was wondering if anyone had encountered one in the past? I have exhausted myself on E-bay and web searching and have come up with nothing. With the exception that it was a Mantua product. The box looks as if it was from the 60's or 70's.
Thanks in advance! Marti

Hi,
I'm not able to help you out with your request, but myself and others would love to see some pics of this set.

at $34.98 msrp sounds like you're the lucky owner of a TC77 Gray Train Centennial. Together with its Blue Train counterpart it prominently ocuppied the back cover of Tyco's 1961 full-color catalog. The copy goes on to further state the "list value of components: $42.22" It is highly prized, both among vintage HO train and Civil War collectors (much like the Louis Marx "Battle of the Blue and Gray" Civil War Playsets.) A near-mint condition example represented as New Old Stock fetched over $400 on eBay last year as I recall. Played with versions, even boxed ones, trade for substantially less. It is one of Tyco's most prized sets, a real icon of the Red Box era. MagAc

I paid $200 for each of my MIB's about 10 years ago. It was through word-of-mouth, not through the internet/train shows
Be sure it has the "history" pamphlets that open up to the left and right when you take the lid off.
