Here's the 0-8-0 we all know.
And here's the variant you might not be aware of.
The differences I can note are the red roofed cab, different road number and of course the silver paint on the boiler. Does anyone have any info on this?

I forgot add that this isn't somebodies frankenstein creation. I have seen more than one identical to this one. I don't believe it's super rare but is definately the variant seen much less.

Hey NYC,
Yes, there are a handful of Chattanooga steamers. I think that one you have with the 1200-series cab number is from later '80s to maybe early '90s.
I think the Chattanooga steamer also goes from 2-8-0 to 0-8-0 over the course of its offerings.
Something that needs better attention on my site...I'm just not a big steam person...again a good examination of the various models and paint scheme variations for the Chattanooga is needed.

Here's the Chattanooga as a 2-8-0 Consolidation (#245-15) cataloged from 1975-1977...

The lowly "Chatanooga" mostly just suffered the "death of a thousand cuts" with CF/Tyco bean counters. Going from the conventional drive pre-production entry shown in the catalog debut, replete with nice detail and add-ons, to the Consol that debuted with that nifty ubiquitous Chatanooga set with several cars including crane and tender. The poor engine then just lost stuff over its production run, starting with the pony truck and detail that made the original offering so pretty (even if a mediocre runner). I think its diminution and cheapening is sort of a microcosm of the whole CFTyco macrocosm in that era. MA

Is one of those variants more apt to have the universally-loated "PT-in-Tender" drive? I think that's the real question that needs answering. To my eye (althought the picture is fuzzy) it looks like the red-roofed version has a suspect set of wheels under its tender...

Yes, indeed. They are all afflicted with Power Erk tenderer "drives." Not that the tender drive technology should have been daunting for the folks who gave birth to the tender-drive General twenty years earlier! Funny, too, that similar tender drives by Lima, Fleischmann, even Pemco and Brazilian-wrought MP run so damned much better (Pemco's offering was even comparably priced, as were some TD Limas.) MagAc

I need to scan some pics, but that Chattanooga with the box car red cab roof is found around 1990 in the TYCO catalog...well maybe not...perhaps there is yet another out there that favors the boiler of the recent IHC 2-8-2 Mikado..if memory serves.
IHC Premier Series Pennyslvania Railraod 2-8-2 Mikado (#M9806)
Guess I need to do some work on the site. I also gasped at the state of the Red Box site, when I went looking for info on Ken's GM&O Box Car yestserday...I really need to just quit my job and concern myself with the TYCO Resource full-time [:p]
