Hi Guys, I was looking at the Tyco Red Box Era Resource and seen a photo of a clear shell F-9,and have a few questions. 1. When were these made? 2. Why were these made? 3. How rare are these units? 4. Was a unpowered unit made?
Thank You, Carl T.

This is all "educated conjecture":
1) Best guess is mid-60's. A better picture might show some of the shell details which would better place the exact year.
2) Dealer promotions, to display the running gear (motors). Lionel also did a run of clear FA units for this purpose, and good examples of those are VERY rare and sought-after. (The story I heard on those was Lionel made more clear units than they had dealer orders for. So Lionel painted over unused clear shells).
3) Rare. I have only seen two come up on ebay... big money each time.
4) Since they were allegedly designed to show off the motors inside, I would guess no unpowered units were made. But it would be very easy to convert one after the fact.

Guys, Tyco made two clear shell F-7's that I know of & Mantua later on in late 70's to early 80's made another, I have two of the early versions one with a single motor & one with dual motors, I was told thew were made to show the type motors that were in the painted engines, in the 60;s there was a lot of input on the type motors in a HO engine from various MGFs, AHM also had a clear shell version on their one diesel BLM or ????, I had a set of these whch were cab onlys but sold them on ebay, I am sure there are some more out there if one would look up or maybe collect certain MFG's, The Tyco's are rare & usually have steps missing & I have seen a few at York for $125.00 & up & were in sad shape,.... I got one in AZ from a Hobby shop that was closing up & paid $25.00 for it, the dual motor came from York last yr & I paid $75.00 for that one, I never saw the Mantua version for sale but I do know a Tyco Friend who has one in BOX, both of mine have no boxes, there were no dummy units made that I know of,....... If someone has one of these & knows what he has & would think a price range from $50.00 to $150.00 depending on shape of shell, some are very dirty & smeared beyond cleaning & have steps missing, to me a boxed engine which is a clean clear shell with all steps is a $150.00 item, Yes, its that rare & not to often do we see any for sale, if you want one for your collection better grab the 1st one you see & dig deep in the pocket because we never know when the next one will show up,.....................................Abe

I saw a clear body for sale last year, and it went for over $50, I think. I bought within the last 5 months a translucent shell for a Penn Line engine, it was in a lot, yellowed but intact. I want to make a ghost train, and finding any shells in non-solid white or clear is almost impossible,so I was lucky to get a Penn line shell at all. And at a decent price for the 5 pieces, under $25 I think. I didn't realize how hard it is to find a clear shell, I was hoping there were more out there, but I guess not.
