so a good thing I bought spare parts from my buddy! I took the one out of my GG1 I tried out last night, it would hum, but not budge. After I took it apart at work this morning, I know why. Every single gear in the main body was TIGHT. The plastic gears were really tight, even after I took the wheels off. The big gear was so tight, I spun it around by itself awhile to loosen it up, and the shaft broke off in the frame. Geez! It looks like they put the gears on, then "ping" the metal shaft end to mushroom it some to hold on the gear. Well, they musta used too much force, because I had a heck of a time getting them off, besides the fact they would spin with only a solid push on the teeth. Did so without damage, but they were so tight, it's no wonder the dang motor wouldn't turn over. I tried using the drill press to drill thru the back, I thought it was a shaft in a hole, turns out it's a formed or molded shaft, so that toasts the frame unless I get it milled out straight and true and put a bushing insert into it. Too much work right now for that.
Another thing I noticed was that two of the 3 axles were binding some, so I looked at the grooves in the frame, and noticed the edges were sharp and had some flashing. I used an X-acto knife to carve and chamfer the edges ( at this point, I'm just experimenting with it, being damaged beyond reasonable repair now ). Finally got both end axle wells smooth enough so the axles would turn without catching and binding. No wonder Tyco had so many problems with these motors, if this is somewhat typical! I'll be checking my parts motors carefully for binding, and chamfer the axle wells too. I didn't realize how crude the mounting of the gears were until I took this one totally apart. It's amazing that that little armature can even move an engine with all the work it has to do! Maybe this one is atypical, it doesn't look like it has any wear at all on it ( no surprise, the motor wouldn't turn over much ). The body is super nice too, no scuffs or abrasions. I'll dig out another PT, and take it apart to check it all out, then file and carve as necessary to relieve undo friction where I can.
Any of you other Tyco-mechs ever do any of this to tune them up some? I can see why they'd overheat, if it has to work that hard to turn the gears, much less move the whole locomotive around a track, and THEN pulling cars. Totally insane. The motor housing itself looks bullet-proof, but the way they engineered the gear mounting, well, that left alot to be desired, obviously. I'm going to try to "fix" a couple of my spare motors using the parts from the GG1 unit, and see if I can get a good running PT out of it. Wish me luck!

Thanks, Steve, but I think I have all I need for now. I just bought about 10 parts motors a couple months ago, in various pieces, from a fellow train club buddy. I found one in those spares that has nice gears, they move real smooth, and just need the wheels and axles and little armature gear. So I think I'll just clean that one up, already pulled the gears off and removed hair from underneath, and swap my GG1 parts into it after I do a minimal lube and clean-up job on it. Appreciate the consideration, though! Nice to know people are out there for us needing help.
