Mantua Crazy Crystals 40' Reefer with Metal Sides - Mid to Late 1950's Red Box Model # 313B. Tin Litho sides over plastic body, loop and hook couplers, mmm, classic. I've been looking for a nice one of these for some time but couldn't afford what people were asking. Hasn't even been cleaned up by me yet.

There were about 4 versions, if I recall...I have the Borden's Cheeses in my 1959 Mammoth of the Rails set. By then, they had X2F couplers. They are fairly rare, as I think they were only made for a few years.

Nice cars guys...
Went to a swap meet yesterday and one of the vendors there gave this to me simply for showing interest in it. It now joins my road's growing snow removal fleet. I'm thinking it is an Ambroid as Silver Streaks had cast metal windows. Any guesses?

I'm not sure where that saying originated but the first time I heard the expression was during a commercial. I'm not sure who the commercial was for anymore but it's the one where the NFL field painter finishes up the end zone for the KC Chefs. Funny stuff and the expressed quote fits perfectly there.
I think it was a Snicker's commercial now that I think about it more.

Hey Jeremy. Neat car...do you have any more of those?
I've got 2 cars made by Jouef for Playcraft. My Grandma found them in her basement a while back. One is a mail car...I never figured out what this one is[B)]

No Cheez, that was in a lot I bought off ebay, its not in the best shape but I thought it looked good so I kept it. I just sits around because of the couplers.

Same with mine. I've only got 3 other cars with couplers similar to this one. I have one engine with loop and hook couplers, but it has much smaller loops and hooks...it does couple with them, but i hardly ever run it.
Ken: Thanx. Do you know what STEF is? And what are those little spikes on the roof? Any idea when it was made?

Just bought it today...

I figure that I will keep an eye on rolling stock like this.
It's a TYCO Brown Box, and I like it 'cuz it's a Pennsy...

besides having to move again, the light at the end of the tunnel isn't so much a train, but a port-hole that overlooks a classification yard. (finally)
John
p.s. It's Summer, right? Sheesh, one of these would taste and feel great while the sun beats down, eh?
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Mine could use a little cleanup, but did come with the box:

Instruction sheet is dated 10/55. The car doesn't fit in the box with trucks installed, but the previous owner tried anyway. But I wasn't going to complain for $7.

Nor sure, but STEF could stand for "Société de Transports Européens Frigorifiques", which means as much as "company for european refrigerated transports".
This refrigerator is an ex-american freight car, which came to France with the Allies in WWI (note the diamond/arch bar trucks). Another load of freight cars and locos from America came over to Europe in WWII, having bettendorf trucks. All of these trains had the small British loading gauge, thus appearing much smaller than continental European or American equipment.
By the way, these arch bar trucks are still in use in France (and much critisized), on nuclear waste cars (castor transports).
So long,
Martin
