Here are some motors that I found while tearing apart an old abused Lenoxx CD player. The big flat can is the main motor and the next larger size ran the laser. The skinny one came from the first player I scrapped and also ran the laser. I wonder what the small ones might work in? All seem to run strongly from track power.

I have one similar to the small one in the photo that I put in an N scale Bachmann 0-6-0. I don't have it ready for a test run yet so I can't comment on how it runs.

Here's a motor I found in a Phillips MP3/CD player. /tyco/forum/uploaded/Ray Marinaccio/rf400ca1.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/Ray Marinaccio/rf400ca.jpg Here's a link to the specs too. http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/cgi-bin/catalog/e_catalog.cgi?CAT_ID=rf_400ca Once I find another one I plan to build a dual powered 6 axle unit. (C630, SD24 or GG1) I did get the N scale Bachmann 0-6-0 running and it worked out great.

Thanks Ray, Looks thin and promising for clearing the middle axle on the 630s.

Ok, I'll admit I am not an electrical type guy, but don't these motors have to be 12 volt?
If not, boy I am interested...

My plan is to use one motor in each truck and wire them in series. I have used lower voltage motors by putting resistors in series with the motors also. Also diodes in series (like the constant intensity lighting kits) in series with the motor will drop the voltage across the motor. I am still working on an onboard PWM control circuit to run lower voltage motors with a standard powerpack.

It depends, Mike. Many of these motors are that are rated at 5.9V will run comfortably at 12 or 15... I've used a number of them for remotoring projects without any overheating issues. Either the listed rating is the nominal voltage instead of the maximum, or they're just very durable. Wiring a pair in series like Ray suggests will halve the speed, and make them last forever.
AF, that's the smallest can motor I've seen from a disc drive. It would definitely be a candidate for N scale projects, assuming it can handle the voltage. The medium-sized one would be a good fit in a Bachmann old-timer 4-4-0 tender.
