I received these all-plastic Globe FA and B units in a lot from the 'bay. The A unit is missing the horns and numberboards and couplers as is the B but in excellent condition. I understand they were produced around '54-'55. I have it on good authority that Crown was bought by Athearn and these are the forerunners to their F units.

Hi Alco Fan,
Nice F units you got there. I was wondering if they came from the factory that color or if someone painted them?
Thanks Mike

They are factory painted gold. I think some of the powered units were gold too. I'm not sure why though.

Perhaps that color was supposed to make them look like quality brass models of the era. High detail at a fraction of the price. [:D]

B 67: I think that's a logical idea about the color, thanks. If you look at them they do make you think of brass.

I seem to recall stocking Athearn Hustler locos in a similar color in the 80s and early 90s. It may have also been to appeal to those collectors who had cabinets of unpainted brass locos in display. Brass-colored plastic locos may not have looked so out of place. Hmmm! Just a thought. I doubt many were fooled into buying such models for any investment potential. [:D]

David versus Goliath?

Just some fun before I send the DD40X to ebay: a comparison of the biggest and smallest diesel locos in HO.

You might get lucky, GIC. I saw one of those standard line B'mann DD40's go for over $200 dollars recently.
