As promised, here is my beaten with an ugly stick AHM NYC FTA. Maybe it will grow on me, if it weren't NYC someone else would own it right now. This isn't catalogued or mentioned on Tony Cook's AHM site. Any info available is appreciated. The engine is still in transit so I can't verify much detail on it. The shell is not painted but raw black plastic. The nose is decaled and unsure of the side lettering/numbering. Is it the real deal or custom?

I love it . I've seen them before but that's all I know. I've tried to win a SF version but no luck. The snub nose is what caught my eye then and now. This is a interesting and historical part of the hobby. Have fun with it.

I picked up this one over the weekend.

This thing is a really "rat" to look at but I can not believe
how well it runs.I just love the way the carbody rocks on the
trucks when it goes into a curve.

My LotW was an interesting find at the Haunt:

Custom-painted C&O C430... but the crasftmanship is incredible. Someone took the time to rebuild the motor, add wight between the body prongs on the ends of the fuel tanks, shave and redo the numberboards, install jewelded marker lights, and add some detail piping atop the air intake and radiator grille areas. The whole thing is held together with old-school brass hex-head bolts, feels VERY solid and runs very well.

I tip my hat to you sir, whomever put this thing together!

Whoever did the C&O C430 also took the time to paint the lower part of the handrails to blend with the body.

The C&O 430 is awesome. I may move to KY if the fishing at the haunt is that good.

Nice looking Cox GP9m! I rebuilt one and have it posted in the custom/kitbash section. Mine started as a thick painted Cheesie unit. Yours looks to have nice bright paint! Great looking loco!

NYC, that F-unit (FT? Who can tell? [XX(] [;)]) was marketed by American Train & Track, and has the same trucks and drive from the AHM C-Liner. ATT imported from various manufaturers like Mehano, and also imported some small Japanese brass locos in the 60's and early 70's.

Here's a web page with some ATT info: http://www.tri-ang.co.uk/OONew/attLocos.htm

Nice find G-I-C ---- Goes to show with a little effort and imagination that a toy Tyco loco can be an impressive detailed model.

You know, the more I look at that, the more I discover.

The filled-in pilots? Done with carved and sanded wood!

The motor mount? Custom retrofitted to a brass plate directly screwed to the shell. It does not rattle when you pick it up.

The extra weights by the fuel tank? Are actually part of a custom metal subframe!

The rebuilt motor? Had the rivets removed, and the block tapped for screws.

And I don't know what was done to the motor, but it runs the smoothest and hardest of ANY MU-2 I have ever seen! The armature is blue though, I wonder if that's a clue...

I would love to disassemble it to learn more of what was done, but I don;t have the proper tools to loosen those hex-heads. Normally I would just use needle-nose pliers but I have too much respect for what was done here to risk messing something up.

Dissection sounds like a good idea. I'm certainly interested in what's inside the MU-2 casing that has been changed.

This idea about powering the rear truck from the the front MU-2 (ala a Hobbytown or Varney Switcher method) came up with Ray as we began talking about the TERP project...

So if you can wihout damaging it open her up and photo it, I'd sure appreciate it. It's like Cheez and Shaygetz said recently, the sheer joy of seeing faces in full "Gob-Smack" mode when a Tyco GG-1 with a TERP truck(s) comes tearing out of a tunnel with 30 cars behind is worth any rivet-counters scorn!

OOORRRRAAAAHHHHHH! [:D]

Hey Puppyfang, where'd you get the pic' for your Avatar?

Not sure if this pic' of my EL PA is of interest to you.

This ALCO PA is a powered B-unit Athearn... metal trucks, older motor.
I'd sell it if you're interested.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

No problem. If you compare them, you'll see it has the same blocky faux-FM trucks that the AHM C-Liners had. Does it have the older 5-pole motor and metal axles?
