| I have a double motor as well. I never would have thought to improve performance by removing the shaft between the motors. When/how did Athearn suggest this? I will give it a try when I play with mine again.

| Mine must have been removed by a previous owner as neither one has a connection.

Yup, Ken, the Athearn DD40 is actually more like a DD35 that was in the blueprint stages but never built. I think Athearn had already invested in the tooling, so they went along with theirs anyway. I've heard many people say that they run better with the two motors working independently, though it seems counter-intuitive.
Bachmann is the only company to make the authentic DD40, which they have retooled. I'm not sure if they're on the market yet.
I guess there's a demand for the old Athearns. They used to go pretty cheap.

Wow! $112 for an old "DD40"? I have one if any one is interested! Mine is even a PRR unit.
The Athearn is a pretty good model of the DD35. The DD35 was built in answer to UP's desire for high horsepower locos. Seems that even 5000 hp was not enough, so the DD40 was built next. The DD35 was built in "A" and "B" formats. The SP had only B units and actually managed to roll one. The UP had both A and B units.
Has anyone managed to convert an Athearn A unit into a B unit?
