Out of the 4 Tyco sharks I tried running tonight, only 2 of them ran (and not well at first). When I tried running my A-team shark, I couldn't even get the light to work. I've had it sitting behind my layout for a couple months since I started building my new layout, but I'm sure it worked the last time I tried running it. The problem is that power is not getting to the motor. I took the shell off, checked all the wires, and removed all the truck covers to check the wheels...I can't see anything wrong. Does anyone have any idea for what could be wrong with this?

As Cat Stevens sang:

You're still young thats your fault.... [:D] [:D] [:D]

No seriously only thing i can think of is dirty wheels.

When you troubleshoot a problem the first question is:

Whats changed?

And as Holmes said when you eliminate everything else, what left is the truth.

(Sherlock & paraphrase)

Troubleshooting is both art and science.

Start with power as directly to the motor as possible and work down to the wheels, continuing to introduce another element till it fails assuming the first test with wires to the motor works... If it doesn't, work "UP" into the motor. You might ask why start there. The answer is in troubleshooting you try whats simple first...

Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem.

(Latin for "Entities should not be multiplied more than necessary"). That is, the fewer assumptions an explanation of a phenomenon depends on, the better it is.

...the motorcyle won't start: is the key on? Kill switch on? Is there gas??? See what I mean???

Hope this helps. If you want to talk cause I'm having some problems with my main computer system I'll PM you my number.

The procedure Gareth suggested is the best way to pinpoint the problem.
I have seen the axles and bearing slots corrode if not oiled, could be a broken wire also.

Hey Ray. The slots that the axles fit in were lookin a little dirty...they didn't seem corroded though. I checked all the wires and they all seemed fine. I'll give the wheels, axles, and axle slots a cleaning and see what happens.

Gareth: It's some sort of break in the current. I put a second engine on the track and it ran full speed, which means the A-team shark wasn't stealing any current away from it. But it ran last time I tried it, and I'm not seeing any obvious problems ( broken wires, wheels on backwards, etc...)

If a lightbulb is burnt out will that block current? That's the only problem I could think of.

Hey Cheez:

If the bulb completes the circut yes. You should still be able to bypass it by giving power directly at the motor

FIXED IT[:D] The problem was where the wire connects to the metal contact which is screwed onto the back truck. The wire was originally attached by simply having metal tabs on the contact folded over the wire. I pulled the wire out, stripped a bit of it and soldered it back onto the contact. The shark works great now.
