I got a Tyco PT engine in the mail today. I know the motor worked before it was shipped to me, but I can't get it started. When I put it on the track the headlight works, and when I push it along the track I can feel the motor turning, but it won't move by itself. I've had other engines do this, and I solved the problem by moving them along the track with the transformer on until the motor started. This ones being pretty stuborn...any ideas on how to get it going??

You might try running it by hooking up wires directly to the locomotive from the power pack. With no load on the locomotive it may start. If not it may need the brushes cleaned and a lube job.

Cheez:
With the truck out can you turn the armature with a finger?

Gareth: Yup. The armature and gears turn fine.
Ray: I have tried touching the wires directly to the wheels, but all I got was the headlight. Lube should be fine. I got the engine from GiC, and he told me he had the engine running for half an hour, so I'm pretty sure it has oil/grease. Brushes...those are the little round pieces of metal underneath the contacts on the non-gear side of the motor right? Hmmm...it could be those. I'll try touching the transformer's wires to the wheels again and see what happens. If it still doesn't work, I'll check the brushes.

HOLY CRAP!!! It worked[:O] [:O] I tried touching the wires directly to the wheels again and it started right up. Wow...I guess when I took the truck off to see if I could turn the armature with my finger, I must have knocked something back into place. Thanx Gareth[:D]
Thanks for the help guys.

Hey Cheez:
Since you got it from GIC I'm pretty sure it's working. That kinda stuff is important to him. You're right, probaly nudged something while working the problem! As my 1st wife would say: "Jammy Git!" (she's from Liverpool. Yes THAT Liverpool) [:D]
By the way that wouldn't be a "fishy" Canadiana would it?

It sure is Gareth[:D] [:D] [:D] Tony did an amazing job restoring it. This is the one that was on ebay a couple months ago. It had a bunch of random detail parts and an Athearn drive. Looks good as new now.
