Let me start this week with a loco that I didn't have much affinity toward in the 70's, but have come to appreciate as probably having gotten a lot of folks started in model trains. I never owned one as a kid--they came out a bit after my beginnings in Tyco, when I had already graduated to Athearn, but some of my friends had them, and they held up well to the not-so-gentle, crash-your-trains kids. In addition to the fact that most major roads did not own these, they also seemed to be massively out of scale! But recently when I had a chance to buy one new-in-box for $5, I jumped on it--I don't know if these later were made with the PT, but this one has what looks to be a version of the MU2. The bottom does identify it as being made in Hong Kong.

Bachmann FT AB Unit (both powered)

This was purchased last week at a small local train show.
Turns out they where brand new never run in the box.
They were marked $7.00 each...both run very smooth.

Here is my contribution-- a MINT GSB Rail LTD "THE DIESEL" SD40-2 BullDog chassis. These are great locomotives for the time period in which they were produced. They came with way more detail parts than the Athearn versions. These perform best with a minimum curve radius of 22R. They will run on 18R curves-but it may derail as mine did on snap track. These loco's came with can motors and flywheels and nickel silver wheelsets. Detail parts included metal grab irons and eye hooks, add on snow plow, plastic handrails airhorns, decal sheet for numbers/number boards clear headlight/numberboard lenses. There was a lengthy write up on this loco compared to Athearn in one of the train magazines. I do remember that Athearn and GSB were in a race to get these on the market. Athearn beat GSB to the market though. I have 2 of these in Seaboard System and 2 undecorated shells going to be custom painted in CSX. The first one of these i bought was in 1983 for $39.99. I still have it--pieces that is--i was 12 years old and became frustrated with it because it would derail on my 18 r curves. I took it apart and lost pieces of it and became dis- interested went and bought an Athearn.......if i only knew then what i know now--with age comes wisdom--

Your's came with flywheels? I have the review from MR and they loved that loco. Their only gripe was the LACK of flywheels! Maybe GSB paid attention and added the flys to later runs.
How often do you see the GSB SD40-2s? I don't think I have ever seen one at a local show or even on ebay!

Got this is in a lot today. Don't know why TYCO didn't make one in U.P.

I was reading from one of the Special Interest Groups regarding a certain locomotive builder, Rogers? Part of the topic included a Dixie locomotive... painting it into a Soo Line 1800's vintage. Well, my mind's wheels started rolling.
I have two of TYCO's Dixie 4-6-0's. Both were decorated in the Western & Atlantic garb.
One of these locomotives had seen better days of running. The smokestack broken off, headlight housing gashed skewed, back head missing, (yes, that gaudy shiny yellow bell,) and a bit road worn pilot/cow catcher. I almost scrapped this thing when I purchased a "almost mint" duplicated Dixie locomotive. So, for its final run, I had a race between these two loco's. And wouldn't you believe it, the road-worn locomotive flew miles ahead in a flash. Hmmm, I pondered... I cut a Bic pen cap and fixed it as a smokestack. Added some cotton as steam. A shot of lube on anything that was articulated, cleaned up the wheels... and well, I stored all my rolling stock in boxes until our layout had a home. To the Kamloops Museum & Archives, our 12' X 36' went.
My locomotives went on display in the cabinents.
Back to the previous introduction...
I applied flat-black paint to the boiler, cab, tender... and then, I scraped the ring sections of the boiler, and any raised mouldings/moldings. Revealing a chrome finish, as if it was painted last. Putting the sand dome and steam dome back on, the railing on... all in brass... And viola: a beauty of an iron horse...

I was so impressed with myself. Now, decals...
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I'm working on a ten wheeler conversion right now. Hopefully, I'll get a digital camera soon, so I can show it.
