The first HO loco my brother and I received at Christmastime, as kids, was this B&0 F-unit in an Athearn, I think, set. It came with a nonpowered B-unit, tank car, yacht on a flatcar, airplane on a flat car, livestock car, B&O hopper and a B&O caboose. I have all this but, no boxes, and some of it is in disrepair. Loco still runs good when I have the bands available.

An Athearn Hi-F Santa Fe A-A passenger set was part of my first Xmas electric set. As a kid, I didn't think much of the rubber-band drive.

Excellent Athearns, guys! I have a custom-painted Geep that I'll dig out...for now here's a real racehorse---A late-era Mantua 2-8-4, it comes equipped with a can motor, flywheel, and a Seuthe smoke unit. Just don't ask how an Erie loco made it all the way out to West Texas!

O.K., Here's my Athearn, and here's the story: This is a beautiful custom paint job for one of my favorite Texas railroads which ran from Ft. Worth to Presidio in the '90's. I drooled over the shell at the famous Bobby Hall's Hobbies in Dallas. I just couldn't pay the $50 they wanted for it. Sadly, Ms. Hall died a couple of years ago, and the shop was closed. Some of the inventory seemed to have migrated to another local shop which is getting rid of all its old H.O. stuff (it's where I've gotten a lot of my recent Tyco gems). I was reunited with the shell, this time for a closeout price of $1! Add to that a vintage Athearn drive unit with metal trucks ($5), and voila! Here it is--I will finish with handrails and details. I will continue to look for an Athearn drive that has flywheels---but I can't complain!

Nope. I'm pretty damn pedantic and well read but I don't. Kind of a strange post. Are you going to illuminate we poor ignorants from the "great white north? [^]

Mike, that CN isn't just custom painted, somebody kitbashed an SD40 by adding a comfort cab. Did CN have such units?

If you need to resize your photos, there's a great free (and adware free!) program called Faststone Viewer that allows you to batch convert, and much more. Give it a try.

My F unit comes in just under the wire...something I swore I'd never get except that this came with all its cars and a caboose for a song at the flea market today.

Anyone else with Athearn Special Editions?

These are my two entries... SD40-2 CNW Falcon Service

^^ ^^ ^^
#6910

#6922 VV VVV VV

I have already entered a few of my other loco's in the other past topics.

I did have a HI-F RDC-3 I decaled as a GN 2583? Also had a HI-F Hustler... man, those things ran like turbo's with a tailwind!

NickelPlate759 Said: "Mike, that CN isn't just custom painted, somebody kitbashed an SD40 by adding a comfort cab. Did CN have such units?"

CN invented the "Comfort-Cab" with the SD/GP-40F, SD/GP40-2F, SD/GP-50F, SD/GP-60F etc. (Even before UP's DDA-40X's. I believe UP copied the CN models, seeings how the DDA-40X's came out as a dual motored GP-40... while the CN came out with their GP and SD-40F's.)
CN did not have F45's-type cab as is the one in Mike's photo... that is, the cab is of an F45. The lower flares(angles) on the L & R windshield are telltales of the F45's and FP45's.

Now, that is what I learned up here since I moved to BC, Canada in 2001.

I don't know who... Wesley MacDonald is beyond the fact the question ended with present-tense "...is?"

Sir John A. MacDonald was Canada's first Prime Minister. Wesley MacDonald must be a descendant/relative.

Mike, I learned a quick way to make the pic's smaller.

Open the picture file... choose "Edit Picture..." Mine commands the editing program in "Paintbrush."
Do not edit the pic.
Save the picture as: GN GP 20 5628.jpg And then press Enter. Do not just open the program and click "SAVE". You want to "SAVE AS:" your chosen file name.

NOTE: The ".jpg" extension MUST be all Lower Case.

You may see a reduced file size with this new save.

John/a.k.a. Zebrails

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Nice looking CNW units! I did not know Athearn did such markings. Though it looks like #6922 is having some "tracking issues"![:D] Happens way too often on my tracks!

Funny thing is... I saw the prototypes back in Rice Lake, WI, about 1974'ish. I didn't own a camera.
BUT, this is a new millennium, and I found these two models up here, west 2,000 miles, in Kamloops, BC, Canada!
Athearn, I think, didn't do too many Special Editions. And if so, in very low quantities, sorta like when Bev-Bel did with Athearn.
Someone might know more about the Athearn SE locomotives.
And hey... thanks for the comment!
I was lucky to find these.
Have a great day/weekend/... whatever!

and now, for something (somewhat) completely different...

these things run like zip.

J/Z
oh, p.s. these were not specifically on fastened tracks. I just wanted mug-shots.
btw, you can see my vid's featuring a few other rolling stock items...on youtube Search for "Zebrails"

Wesley MacDonald was an engineer with CN....he rode an ore train from Brunswick mines to the Nepisiquit jct at 70 mph with NO AIR and wrecked the entire train...theres' an audio file on a page called "lounge car"on one of the rr related sites....I think its webville and hypertext rr....and he walked away from it!!
That safety cab probably saved his life....listen to that file....you wont be dissapointed....just type in Runaway train Lounge car on your search page...probably take you right to it....have fun
