I also had some success this past weekend. I found the Tyco 10-Wheeler (steam), New-in-Box. It is dressed for the AT&SF, has a molded-red cab, and matching domes (domes match, but are slightly different--which would seem right, since I assume one was a sand dome, and one was a steam dome). In addition, I picked up an early brown-box UP F-9 dummy (NIB). Grand total--$20. It's amazing the difference between those who view Tyco as being cheap old toys, and those who think they are made of gold!

Interesting... I'd appreciate it if you'd please address the following:
-Are the domes plain, or fluted? -What color(s) is the bell assembly? -Does the box style indicate the year of production?

| http://hoseeker.net/tycoinformation/tycocatalog1968page04.jpg is a site with a good picture of the matching domes I have (don't know if this link is live in this message, but it's page 4 of the 1968 Tyco catalog--the site is listed at the bottom of the forum--Ho Seeker), so my domes are mostly curved and smooth. The bell is the bright yellow plastic, and the box has a grid on the back with drawings of several items (can't remember if it's engines or accessories, I'll check at home). I took it out of the box, put a touch of oil on the motor bearings and grease on the gears, and it runs better than any steamer I have!--it's great pulling the matching old time psgr. cars which I already had. Right now, I can't decide whether I'm going to a) sell it (I have too much stuff!) b) keep it and leave it original, or c) repaint it black, change the stack, and convert the tender to an oil burner to look more like an old SP engine.

Thank you very much for your efforts, and the info! I have two similar-sounding loco boxes, one for my AT&SF ten-wheeler, and the other for a D&RG twelve-wheeler, which are dated 1975 on the back. In general, I'd expect these boxes would be used for 1976 and (possibly) later production.
Also, I understand your desire to convert and/or repaint your new engine. I think that's one of the great attractions of the Tyco 4-6-0s and 4-8-0s. I'm working on one ten-wheeler right now. As cheap as you got this Santa Fe, you may want to keep her as-is, and find some "beaters" for your creative work.
