Is the paint on those different than normal production?

Reason I ask, is that I don't think the alignment of the words is a true pre-production test, as I actually have the same things here in my scrap bin - one midnighter aligned, and another offset, exactly as shown above. I can dig them out for pictures. For what it's worth, I think the offset one is more "correct" (ha) since it matches the engine better.

This is actually a common production gaffe from Tyco, where simple multicolor separations are involved. They were not always careful in aligning the masks for the second color. Another prime example of this is the New Haven 50' boxcar.... sometimes the N and H are close together, and sometimes they are far apart. Can make for some interesting variances.

You can also look on cars with painted designs... the 62' reefers like Green Giant and Cambell's foten have terrible alignment... "coloring outside the lines" if you will.
