life like coil car tops
Tuesday, December 04, 2007
I'm trying to repair an old life like coil car that had the drop down tops. I think this car was also offered by AHM and Bachmann. Mine is a P&LE car and I'm in need of the two top lids for it. If anyone has any of these things available, please let me know. It doesn't matter which road name the lids are in as I can paint and decal them to match the rest of my car. Let me know if any of you has any ideas or sources as to where to find these things

That's one of my favorite HO cars... There are 9 different versions. They were offered first by AHM, then Life-Like, Lionel and Bachmann. The lineage of this car (and roadnames) from one vendor to another is interesting and confusing.
P&LE and B&LE are the most common. CN is the rarest, DT&I and EJ&E can also be tough to find. The CBQ and N&W were only offered by AHM and are the plainest ones.
I have some spare jade green P&LE lids amassed from when I put the collection together; PM me and we'll work something out.
I also designed authentic decals to make your own custom versions of these cars (or spruce up the AHM versions). All the data is correct and identical, you just add your own reporting marks.
In real life, the clamshells proved cumbersome and impractical, so the real cars were very rare. The covers were ultimately removed and the cars served out as regular gondolas.

| The Life-Like Coil car is a neat piece. I had the yellow/black DT&I car on my 1970s layout. I still have the basic body of it. Since then, I have also bought a new one on Ebay. Seems like the coil cars come in some neat color combos...
