I've asked a few questions on here, so thought I would introduce myself. I didn't have any trains as a kid, although I had a US 1 trucking set and loved it. My story is, last Christmas my 4 year old cousin got one of those Athearn John Deere train sets, somehow I got put in charge of building a layout and getting him some more cars and engines. I live in Alabama and there is little to no used train stuff around here, and I wasn't even sure what I was looking for, so I was forced to look on ebay. After paying some outrageous shipping charges. I starting buying large lots of stuff and repair lots, that's how I found the wonderful world of Tyco. I found that I loved repairing trains, and reselling the ones I don't need so I have little of nothing in my layout. Its really become a great hobby, my friends laugh at me, for playing with trains. I've actually stayed at home a couple of Friday nights and worked on trains while they went to the bar, they couldn't believe it at first and accussed me of being with, shall we say some large girls that you would not bring in public with you, but they stopped by and there I was soldering gun in hand and train parts everywhere. Anyway I really want to thank all the guys on here for your wealth of knowledge. Here is my Tyco lot at this moment.

Welcome aboard Jeremy. I still get laughs once in a while from people when I mention my trains, but when they see my workshop and realise I have something to show for my time and money instead of wasting it at the bar, I get the last laugh.

Hi Jeremy,
Welcome aboard! Rest assured I share your sentiments: for all my foolish ways, at least I know if the "stuff" ever hits the fan, I can sell my trains or other stuff. Even a pittance would be better than the "nothing" a kidney-filtered beer would show. Although it is fun to have a few in good company now and then.
Model Railroading builds a lot of skills in a lot of areas... probably the most valuable one for me has been Patience. But I'm amazed at how some things I do in this hobby can apply to "real" life... now if only I could gets paid by it... [:P]

Hey there and welcome to the list. I too live in Alabama about 350 miles south of you in the Mobile area. There is nothing for 300 miles in either direction from me either that has any used stuff. We have 2 hobby town USA stores here but I wont spend money in there becuase chain stores hurts the little guys. There used to be a fellow who would come to Mobile when the GATS show used to visit the fairgrounds and he owned a hobby shop in Huntsville called Rio Grande Action Hobbies. He had a selection of some used stuff and was reasonable. Im not sure if he is even around anymore , this was about 9 years go.
