Here is one you do not see too often. Mantua Pennsylvania Caboose Lighted. This has the same road number as the Tyco version. Except that this caboose has a painted body and metal chassis with a light socket, with window glazing.

I picked up one of these cabooses at a local train show for $1.00. The wheels are a bit tarnished but overall looks fine. I thought these were Tyco production.

Hello Carl.
I have one similar to that, I also got it for a dollar but it needs some help. It looks like a kit-built since it uses screws. But it has trucks like a lighted car, riveted in place, even though there is no hole for a light?

I have a couple other cars with the metal chassis, with a hole... is this where a light went?

------
Speaking of uncommon "Little Red Cabeese", for sake of conversation, here is a pair. The D&H has that metal chassis with the hole. The GN has a plastic frame.

GIC, The Pennsy caboose I have also has the plastic frame. The light is mounted on the top of the frame. Yours just might still have the light assembly inside. The trucks on mine are also riveted.

Yes it is. I have another newer one that is yellow and blue with the shield decal. My understanding is that both are scarce.
The cool thing about it: it was made in the USA well into the brown-box / HK era.

I have a good floor for that type caboose. If your interested, let's make a deal. If not, what do you want for it so I can put it back together.

Hi Guys. Here is a picture of the underside. The Light socket is held in place with screw. The socket connects to one truck and picks up current from the other though the metal chassis. I also included a picture of the UP Caboose.

Thanks for the help guys.
Carl - thanks for that info. I think I peered inside once and didn't see anything, but I will double-check and have another look-see.
Ray - What kind of deal did you have in mind? I would like to keep this caboose since it would be neat to "get them all" and I'm sure parts will turn up someday (I have plenty of plastic spares I can use in a pinch for display). Let me know what you are looking for?
Vintage HO - Thanks for that pic! Really helps to know how they were supposed to work. I don't have much red-box but I'll slowly work my way in there someday.

| Maybe you guys can shed some more light on this (excuse the pun!). I seem to have the lighted Tyco/Mantua cabooses that have the metal underframe, with the round opening that the light fixture fits into. But I also have an old "Tyco Kit" caboose (unassembled, still in box) that has a plastic underframe. It appears to have trucks pre-riveted into a type of brace that appears to snap into the plastic underframe or body. If you have more info on that style, and when it appeared, I'd like to know more. Chris.

The Tyco lighted caboose is one of my favorite "Tinplate HO" items. I have only one in SF.

The caboose is one of my favorite cars, I have at least 24. Three of them share this heritage...
This one I received in an estate lot. I don't paint over or modify a past modeler's work save for minor paint touchups and any necessary upgrades to be compatible with my equipment.

The second one is your standard Tyco fantasy paint...

And the third makes it clear who got the mold somewhere along the line. This was part of a set issued in the early 80s by IHC, the Corkey's Carnival train...you gotta love something that comes with a pink trimmed box car[:O)]

It's neat to pick-up rolling stock that another modeler has done. Speaking of cabooses I bought one at the Cumberland show last year where this modeler had followed directions in MR or MRC to center the cupola and had done a nice job with freelanced PA RR markings. I had started one years ago but only centered the cupola and primered it. Does anyone have that article to post or tried that procedure?

I built one years ago (without the article). I haven't put the decals on yet.

Ray, That looks great. Did you do this, like me, before Bowser came out with their kit. Do you use it on the rails?
