Hi Guys:
My LotW, this week is a Tyco Switcher that until recently I had never seen before (This paint scheme is what I'm referring to). As you can see from the second photo, the power drive is definitely Mantua MU-2.

Cool Stuff! A Tyco Switcher in SF was my first model train locomotive. Previously I had access to my brothers Lionel NW-2 CNJ in "O" scale

| That CP rail is a cool little bugger. Now you just need to find the scarce Penn Central in matching design and then you'd have a Christmas consist. Or something. lol.

(ORIGINALLY POSTED BY ABE, MOVED BY MODERATOR)
Hello, Here are a pair of the old Metal Sharknose diesels that I find interesting as a Tyco/Mantua collector, the Blue & White set is a custom painted set that has been copied from the original engines that sat in the cabinet in the front office of the Mantua plant, the original Blue & White set was used for the traveling Mantua display layout that Mantua used to take to various shows & stores to show there products, this was in the early 50's & in the days before TV ads were so popular & it was also the way all the big train companies showed there items & naturally advertised, it was very popular in the late 40's & early 50's to see train layouts around Christmas time, the original Blue & white Sharknose set is now owned by a former Mantua employee, this engine you see was very correctly copied from the original, the Blue & orange engine came from the same cabinet as did the Blue & white set & I was lucky enough to be able to buy it from the same person who has the Blue & white set, it is believed to be a early prototype which is hand painted & lettered, but just never got produced as the yellow, red & silver version came out along with a Blue & silver version, a Union Pacific, PRR & a Orange & brown version are what I know of to have been produced in the 50's, the original motors were not the best of runners but if you compare them to other HO engines from that time I am sure they would be considered to be a top performer, I have a set of the Metal Sharks with a Hobbytown drive installed which is a very good puller & performer, one of the best in my opinion, I still like to hear the unique sound these old hobbytowns make as the gears are meshing, they are a very smooth running engine,.I am sure the most of you are of the Brown box Tyco era & I hope you might like to see some of the early Mantua Engines, I collect early Mantua & the red box era of Tyco, I am a fan of the Passenger & work train sets from the 60's, Hope you enjoy,................Abe

Wow! Those sharks are awesome. I ESPECIALLY love the orange and blue, although that's probably my fondness for the Chicago Bears showing (yes I know they suck this year).
Were the stirrups on the blue unit replaced? The front ones look like brass.
I also like how the cab step kickwells were painted gray - nice touch!
Very nice items. Thanks for sharing. And you're right, the early MU-1 motors can barely get out of thier own way in those diecast sharks, but... they do sound pretty cool.

The steps on the blue A-unit are replaced with brass as this was bought before Ebay days when the only source of finding old quality engines were at Train meets such as the TCA show at York, Pa & the only engines I found was this one with broken steps which I repaired, I have found several units since on ebay with all steps intact but never got around to painting another, Thank you for your help in this !
