Hello All--I'm a Tyco collector and operator. I still have the original box from my childhood set. I can't recall if I got it for Christmas in 69, 70, or 71. It was one of the last of the 'red box' era, I guess. The box had a SF GP 20 pulling a SF 40' box, SF flat w/trailers, WM flat with culverts, operating ore dump car, and SF caboose. Everything was drawn (painted?), not a photograph. It showed the train going over a tall trestle in the arid West. The box advertised the piggybacks and ore dump, and had the Sears logo on it. Ironically, the actual set had a Swift reefer instead of the box, and a GN flat instead of the WM. Can anyone narrow down when this was offered? Chris.

According to the paperback book The Toy train Dept. it wasn't '69 and was not earlier. One of the links like the HOseeker has some catologs and may help you. I found my own first Tyco set in the '69 Sears Cat. section of this book.
Good luck.

Hi Adams-- I would say your set is from 1970-71 era based on the description of box design. 1973 and up train sets as far as my catalog shows are all color pictures of Tyco trains in upper corners.(photo below) This was used thru about 76-77 and the train set covers changed again.

Thanks guys, It's looking like it may have been Christmas of '70 when I received it. That would have made me 5 1/2, which seems about right. It could possibly have been Christmas of 71, but weren't the brown boxes coming out about then?
