Anybody know of any promotional 40 foot sliding door boxcars that Tyco offered? Seems like they always offered any of their promotional stuff with the 50 foot plug door.

Star Kist Tuna (2 Versions, both mucho rare - one grey, one mustard yellow)
Consolidated Paper Company (mucho rare)
RCA Silverama (came in an RCA set)

Very nice THOR! Are these red box era cars? If not do you know which ones made it into the brown boxes?

All Red-Boxed.

To my knowledge (which is becoming fuzzier), there were no brown-boxed promo 40 footers, just the 339 50 foot plugs, a chem tank car, and 2 pigs.

Yes, I agree with theoldreliable that TYCO-Mantua did have a number of Red Box Era and possibly earlier than 1960 40' Box Car promo items, but in general the '70s and later saw the 50' Plug Door as the promo car of choice nearly every time.

One of the final 40' Box Car special that comes to mind is the JCPenney white car with blue lettering included in train sets sold by the company. This is mid/late '60s and I'd guess among the last of any 40' Box Car that got a promo paint job.

Tyco also produced two cars for E&H Model Hobbies of Philadelphia. The cars used the same paint masks and numbers as the Rutland box car. Blue or red was used where the green was on the Rutland and silver instead of yellow. Black lettering with the E&H logo as seen in old Model Railroader ads with black unpainted doors. Some sharp looking cars, I saw one go on Ebay in the past year for around $10.00.

My Star Kist Tuna car is a very light gray almost white, if anybody cares.

Before he disappeared, Mr. Tyco sent me a picture of the Star-Kist cars. There are at least FOUR of them, and they are all VERY cool and nearly prototypical looking. Each is a different color and sub-heralded for a different kind of tuna. White/Gray, Yellow, Green, and Blue. ALSO a red Star-Kist 4-wheeler caboose to complete the set, but the locomotive (if any) is unknown. All in "Little Trains" boxes, featuring old-school Mantua couplers. All very rare.

I have that Penneys car, it's very plain. They also did this same scheme on the 50' plugdoor. Seems lots of promos of that era were plain ol' blue-on-white: PPG, Quaker, Penneys, and Westinghouse all come to mind.

I picked up this E&H car a month or two ago. It was my first redbox purchase and am rather pleased with the graphics. Is this one of the ones you were talking about TycoTrains?

That is nice car you have there. But the cars I have are 40 footers. One is painted red and silver the other blue and silver. I will post pictures when I have more time.
