A couple years ago from a certain internet auction site I purchased a Tyco/Mantua 4-4-0 "The General" that had been fitted with a Cary "Baldwin" boiler. These boilers are fairly rare and I don't think the seller knew the value of what he was selling since his price was only $44. Anyhow, the loco ran but was painted dull grey and the finish was wearing off, so I took it apart and completely stripped it down. I finished the restoration this weekend. Here are a couple pictures of the final result.
Here is the model before restoration:

Remarkable restoration. The tender is for oil firing?

The fake "wood" tender load on top of the stock Mantua/Tyco "The General" model (which is from the Civil War era) would have been anachronistic for a 4-4-0 using the Cary Baldwin boiler, as the larger Cary boiler comes from a later (say circa 1900) period in time when wood was no longer used for firing. To get around that, the Cary Baldwin boiler kit came with a big cast metal hatch piece for the top of the tender. The idea was that you removed the fake plastic "wood" load from the stock Mantua/Tyco tender and then used the big hatch piece supplied with the kit to cover up the big hole that was left in the tender after you removed the "wood." It wasn't a perfect solution. Wood was still used for firing until around 1890 or so and the first US oil fired loco didn't appear until 1900, but given the choice between wood or oil, and given the limitation of the kit having to reuse the stock Mantua/Tyco tender, I think using the hatch piece to convert the loco to an oil burner was a good compromise.
