Refreshed for Tiffany 3-9-10

There are a couple of versions of Tyco spirit of 76 alco century 430 that tyco produced. The 1st version has president of the united states written on the seal and was pulled from market as tyco had not gotten permission to print this on the seal. Supposedly anyone who had purchased these with lettering were suppose to turn these back in and recieve the unlettered approved version. I own two of these with lettering. one is sealed in the box and one is mint out of box. The 1st version produced in 1974 has mantua power drive( pop rivets on truck motor bottom) mantua tyco on bottom of fuel tank-stars and stripes across top and sides of loco and no small spirit of 76 seal on front of nose and blue stripe around cab and nose with american flag on cab side in middle. The second version i own has a blue roof with red roof cab. The front of nose on engine has spirit of 76 seal and no blue stripe. The presidential seal does not have president of the united states written around it. It does have us flag in middle of cab as 74 version- The paint is a different color on this one also compared to the 1974 version as well as a slight difference in the 1776 lettering on rear of loco. The 1974 version is more crisp than later versions. See attachments of photos of 1974 version below.

Here is second version photo. This one is still sealed in plastic wrap from tyco factory. I picked this one up at a show when i was 12 for $10.00 in 1984. It has mantua tyco on bottom also but has tyco power truck-not the power torque version. see attachment

Thanks for posting. Now I can see if that $95 Alco is the rare version (out of curiosity).

I would hesitate posting ownership on the internet. You risk the Feds raiding your Tyco collection.[:)]

Another version which is third version is just like the 1974 but also lacks the wording on seal. The paint is brighter and not as crisp as 1974 but does have stars and stripes over top of engine. it also does not have blue stripe around cab. will post photo shortly of this one or if someone else has one-post it.

The one you got for 12$ is a PTed Alco, Gen II, isn't it. It has the side frame with the 3 leaf springs and no protrusion on the wheel bearing like the MU2 version, Gen I.
