These shells are from my Tyco junkyard. They are all Santa Fe alco 430's that were originally equipped with mu power system. I stripped these locos for their motor. While looking at these-i noticed that each one has a different stencil for the 4301 on the sides. Note--the handrails on the two in pic have been removed and used on other tyco locos i have. Look at the picture closely to notice each 4301 stencil and how it changed during production.

Here is another variation. This one is from the 60's red box edition. it is mint(added 6-30-07)

You're right and the font is different on other 4301 Alcos as well. I think it would have been easier to use the same font unless they wore out a tampo.

The first and the third look the same to me, although the registration varies such that one looks more faded.
I have noticed that the style of font on the 430 seems to directly correlate with when a given example was made.
Compare the font styles used on roadnames that were only offered for a short time - say for example the later Blue Santa Fe and GT - to others that had a full run like IC/G and Red Santa Fe. The full-time examples will have number fonts that often match the fonts on the uncommon roadnames. It even works when you look at earlier uncommons like the BN, GN, and PC and you'll see fonts that were "exclusive" to those years. The CN, IC/G and red Santa Fe all seem to have examples of each style, since they always seemed to be offered concurrently. You'll also notice that some fonts do not reappear in the PowerTorque era.
The second Santa Fe in Brian's pic, has a font that matches my GN. The fourth one has a font that matches a CN example I have... and I have seen the CN with the condensed font shared by the first and third of Brian's examples.

The full photo on the bottom of the post has red horns rather than the typical yellow ones. My apologies to anyone that already stated that. [:I]

Hey Brian,
uh, I noticed the single RED horn set right away.
Nice "Font" prints. Pretty cool variations.
Hey, whaddya want for that HERSHEY'S Reefer? I am collecting them.
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?
