My LOTW this week is very special to me, as it was one of my first HO Locomotives that I bought in a box for $8. The MU-2 motor on this 45-year-old Spirit of '76 TYCO-MANTUA C430 still runs like a top to this day. Out of my whole collection, this is probably my favorite unit.

Mega cool collection, A A Ron. The good old MU 2 motor.

So, the Mantua (Model Power re-pop) did not perform at all to the need- too fast and erratic electrical pick up. Back to the store it went.
Stepped up and shelled out 2 bills for this Bachmann American for this museum display. But rarely do I spend anything like that on any given thing, but I'd seen Crusty's at work and was pretty amazed at its silky performance, not to mention the sound.
The can motor and the short and sweet drive mechanism impresses, and the electrical pickup is about as good as I've ever seen. Now we'll see if she can do the test of time: 40 hours a week of run time through June.
I've had less than optimal experiences with this brand, but maybe they got it right this time.

Alright, since chops got his new Jupiter, here's my pride and joy. I'm going to get my hands on the new tooling one. Someday. I've tricked mine out a bit. Red tender wheels, all red drive and pilot wheels, black running board, some silver here and there, and of course, a real wood load!
He runs ok, but the newer one runs better, (And has a constant headlight, mine just won't light all the time!) And there's some changes in the tooling. The new one just looks a heck of a lot better. Enjoy, chops. Don't wear it out too fast on that exhibit layout.

Well, that real wood load has mine beat to Hell and back. What did you use for that? I need to do the same. Mine looks like melted porridge. On the other hand, the locomotives that came to El Paso were all coal fired, given that there isn't much in the way of wood from East or West.

Just got some thin sticks from the yard and chopped them up to overlay the weight that came with it. Then I glued them onto the weight and made adjustments as needed. I then took a brown pastel and rubbed it over the wood, and then smeared it with my finger. The wood load on the NT Jupiter is actually very well done in my opinion, and with just a bit of weathering, would look like real wood

Actually, numbers beginning with zero were also a New Haven thing:

I don't have the story on why they did this, but from the start of the electric/diesel era on the New Haven, anything with a three-digit number had a leading zero!
