According to Tyco Resource, the CBQ operating boxcar was introduced in 1970 which is about the time Consolidated foods bought out Tyco. Ayone know if it was a new model unique to the brown box era? Or was it a Mantua carryover?

John: This car shows up in the '70-'71 catalog, which doesn't reference Tyco as being part of Consolidated Foods, as do catalogs from 72-3 on. It shows up in some transitional red box sets, with combinations of both box types. (I've reported previously that my Railroad Empire set, purchased new in 1971, came in a late-Red box era master box and contained both box types as well as red box era inserts. The CBQ boxcar set enclosed was in the first-generation box with the background painted car-box introduced that year for it and the ore/log car, piggyback set, rr crossing, freight depot, ore dump and freight unloading depot. This box was quickly followed by a brown box with photo. Although I've never seen a red box version of this car, that early greenish box with the background painting of the car and dock is contemporary with transitional red box sets. It is, therefore, a Tyco/Mantua creation. The only change in the car over the years that comes immediately to mind is that initial offerings featured open stirrups, like their plain-jane contemporaries. Later versions have the rather-less-delicate closed stirrups. MagAc
