In this video I open up the tender of my Tyco 4-4-0 "General" steam locomotive, to find the brushes & commutator to be fairly clean for their age. I then tested the "General" without the tender cover on, to physically see the motor running. I then returned to the work table, to lubricate all the gears, including the drive shaft connecting the locomotive to the tender, and the gear mechanism within the locomotive itself. After that, I re-assembled the "General" and tested it out again, only to get similar results. The tender & trucks got very hot to the touch after only 5 minutes of running, so I now know that there is either a contact issue with the wheels on the tender or the magnet in the motor assembly is too weak after 50+ years. Stay tuned for part 3, where I will tear down the motor, and install a new Neodymium earth magnet!

A useful video, I appreciated the fast forward action; it allowed
one to see the process without the usual tedium of regular
speed. I will be most interested in seeing these new
magnets and how they work out.

Interested to see the motor breakdown, I need to get a few open myself and clean the metal part the commutator spins in because it's all rusted.
