After trying to coax this NOS Bachmann PT motor into any sort of movement, I gave up and went forward with the dreaded task of cutting this Athearn SD40 chassis to be narrow enough to fit in the shell. I will also have to saw it in half and divide the chassis, maybe staying with one power truck, or devising a long, flexible drive shaft.
In any event, this stuff is harder than granite, certainly not zinc, I am guessing steel. Wearing out to brand new hack saw blades in the process of sawing the fuel tanks, and every now and then the blade slips, nicely sawing my thumb or fingers.
Truly, it makes me wonder about the ancient Egyptians sawing 20 ton boulders into perfect cubes in the absence of steel and auxilliary power.

Interesting kitbashing work, Chops! Hope it works out.

Yep, if I ever got stuck in jail with only a file, I am getting much practice at sawing through steel.
Actually, there was an inmate who sawed through his bars using a piece of yarn rolled in dirt (for the abrasive quality). Took him quite some years, but he did make it out eventually, er, not for long though.
I'm pretty confident the design concept will work once I get all the chunks cut off. That and some JB Weld to hold the contraption together. It justs frosts me solid that yet again, another Bachmann with an impossibly unreliable PT motor.

Something you might want to look at in the future is the Model Power (Mehano) FP45 chassis - which is a much easier repower for the Bachmann E60CP.
Not quite the puller as the Athearn drive, but easily remotored with a can motor and no metal to saw.

Thanks, Vic- that'd be the way to go. I tried using a chassis off an AHM Krauss-Maufe, but the transmission is blown.

And the build goes on:

Now I've got the chassis narrow enough, the next issue is the length, which is way too short. Going to saw off the back half, maybe I'll try to rig up a drive shaft using rubber tubing, or maybe just leave it as a six wheel drive, which will probably be enough for the light duty I have in mind for it.
