Check out this really cool LED Headlight upgrade product for
Athearn diesels that I found on eBay....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/PARTS-x2-custom-LED-Head-lights-for-Athearn-Blue-Box-F-units-F7A-F7B-F7-etc/202631686084?hash=item2f2dca27c4:g:yIcAAOSwcWtbtMgg

On a whim I purchased a couple of these kits to check them out
and I was pleasantly surprised at the improvement! Check out
the photos below to compare the stock lighting system versus the
LED replacements.....

This Burlington Northern F7 is equipped with a conventional Athearn
headlight lit by a half volt.

This Santa Fe F7 is equipped with the LED Headlight also lit by a
half volt. What a huge difference!!!

At higher voltages the effect is even better...

Check out the Burlington Northern unit with the
conventional headlight at 5 volts.

Versus the Santa Fe unit with the LED headlight
also operating at 5 volts.

Not only does the headlight on the LED equipped unit glow
brighter than the original design but the so called "Hot Dog Oven"
glow in the locomotive Cab is eliminated!

The new LED headlight part is very simple.

To install it all you have to do is
remove the original Athearn headlight fixture from its frame mounted
bracket and plug the new LED headlight fixture in its place.

You will need to solder the black wire lead from the LED to the front truck
but I suppose wire glue may work to! The shipping and handling
costs almost as much as a single package containing two LED headlight
fixtures so I would recommend ordering a bunch of them at the same
time to cut the cost per unit.

One of the guys here taught me how to make the LED's work. I used the on all my Athearn BB C44's and AC4400's, IHC GG1's and E60CP's. I used a 1/4 Watt 470 ohm resistor from the now defunct Radio Shack. There is a guy on Ebay that sells clear water LED's that I use with a lot of success....
