I use a Model Power box car with an abrasive pad attached, as built.
Abrasive pads, for routine use, will simply spread the dirt around
without taking anything off. Additionally, my theory is that they
microgroove the rails, and that can increase micro arcing and
sparking, hastening oxidization.

I take a square of cotton cloth, dab it with Wahl's Hair Clipper Oil,
and run it around for a few laps. Then, to remove excess grime,
I run a dry pad.

A lot of folks might think that putting oil on rails would be bonzo,
as oil is used as insulator in some applications, but this trick by
Lionel Strange works fabulously, and lasts much longer than a
wood alcohol rub down.
