Have this week off, so I had the opportunity to be at KC's Union Station this morning for the arrival of UP's 4-8-4, pulling a string of Heritage fleet passenger cars. If you're in the area, it's on display for the next two days, then leaves the morning of the 5th via Lawrence, Ks and Topeka. I'm going to try and catch her again at the Lawrence UP depot.

This is the first time I've got to see her in motion, pulling in to Union Station. Magnificent sight, reminds me why I love this hobby so much.

I got to see her go through rural Polo, Missouri yesterday morning. I always see locos like this on display at Union Station-Kansas City, but rarely do I catch them out on the road. Nice to see it in action.

BTW, Angus as you free this week...rumor is Fun 4 All Hobbies in Topeka on Gage Blvd. is going out of business and all trains are 50% off!!! Check it out!

Holy cow, Tony - thanks for the tip! Though I do hate to see another brick and mortar hobby shop close.

It's getting harder and harder for the brick & mortar guys. Bud (yes, that's his name) at the Golden Spike in Burbank (Chicago) IL has been ever the worse for wear every time I make it in to visit. He was downright giddy that I purchased several items from him last time; sadly they were nothing "big ticket" but he still gave me an unadvertised discount nonetheless.

The advice and help I've received from him over the years has been priceless, and its great to browse before you buy (or examine in-hand to satisfy your curiosity).

I actually buy from brick & mortars when I can - I don't mind paying a little extra to help the little guy pay his bills and help me out. It truly is a win-win. Of course I buy a lot online, but still... spread the wealth is a good mantra.

Sadly I think I'm the only moron who does this sometimes.

Well, I'll put in a plug for my favorite haunt...Doc's Caboose in Kansas City. They do mail order, have great customer service, a wide selection of in-stock detail parts, carry HO and N scales, and they discount on pre-orders and many stock items.

Just watched the 844 leave Union Station-Kansas City. Neat to see this old Northern 4-8-4 sharing the yard with Amtrak P42's and Superliners from the morning's Chief that had arrived just before 844's departure.
