quote:Tonight I cracked-open the seemingly NOS LifeLike Blinking Water Tower that I also got in the big purchase last month. I discovered that the previous owner removed the light bulb/wiring, so unfortunately unless I wire-in a light bulb, this water tower will no longer blink.
But, that's alright, because nothing on the Ephrata Valley Railroad is lighted/operating, so I feel it fits in on the outskirts of the layout -- replacing the rather shanty-looking green house.

They are Athearn covered hoppers. I converted the knuckle couplers to horn-hooks though.

Tonight I put my Santa Fe Blue&Yellow Warbonnet GP18 #2654 into service on the Ephrata Valley Railroad. It runs superbly! I got it as part of the "Louisiana Purchase" of train stuff from my neighbor back in October.
Please enjoy this video of it in action on the EVRR! Please Like on YouTube!

I decided to destroy about 3/4 of the inner line track on the EVRR, mainly because it has been flawed ever since it was installed over 4+ years ago, and has cost a lot of derailments and frustration. The new track I laid down was arranged slightly different then what used to be there, hence widening the inner line a bit in spots where track was just squeezed too tightly. Also added a bit more scenery. Success!
Please enjoy this video of AHM Pennsylvania RR FP45 #1473 hauling freight on the inner line. It is the 1st FP45 in my roster, and the longest diesel locomotive to ever run on my layout.

Here's a video of my Pennsylvania RR GP9 #7132, by Athearn. I never owned an Athearn in the first 4 years of the EVRR, but once I got one, and discovered that they run astoundingly well, I now can't help but picking up any Athearn Blue Box diesel I can find, at a good price. #MadeintheUSA

For me, while they do run quite well, I HATE the shells! The hoods and noses just look so fat!
I wonder what happened in their department. Must have gotten the measurements wrong!

Hmmm, that's an interesting perspective. I always thought that Athearn was one of the most prototypically-accurate model train manufacturers - completely opposite from Tyco, for example.

I think in the earlier days, the motors and mechanisms were a bit too wide to go in a prototypically narrow hood. There were later models in which Athearn was able to get the hood to the proper width, but the earlier designs had that compromise.

And thus the invention of OO scale, at 1/76, to accommodate the new generation of small electric motors. I love that slightly chunky look of OO on my British stuff.

RP, compare your proto 2000 NYC GP7 to the athearn Pennsylvania GP9, (Which are essentially the same) you'll see what I mean

Yeah, now that I think about it, you're right. But still, for what it is worth, I think the compromise to make the shells a little larger, while the actual Athearn mechanism can run reliably forever, was a good one.

Thank You!! I really appreciate it. The EVRR is just 4' x 4'
By the way, to all, this layout is safe and sound, under a dust cover currently, while I focus all of my attention on RETRO TYCO.

Thanks Chops!
So tonight I took the dust cover off of the Ephrata Valley Railroad and ran some trains, the first time doing so since over 7 months ago! The hiatus has made my enthusiasm to get back working on this "railroad" again, increase.
I still have plans in store for the EVRR; swapping out buildings, improving scenery, etc, as this layout is what I like to call "forever 99% complete" - there will always be a chance to add something new. The layout, my first in HO, is now 5 years old and never gets old.
For now, enjoy this video of train action, featuring LL "High-Hood" Santa Fe GP38-2 #3560 and one of my Bachmann Spectrum Great Northern GP30's.

Well, I do plan on selling 1 or possibly 2 of my 3 Great Northern GP30's very soon. When I do so, I'll post the Ebay link/s here, as well as to other items I'll be selling.
In fact, that is my plan for next week and going forward, upon starting my new job - to thoroughly sort through my collection of HO-Scale cars for the Ephrata Valley Railroad, and determine which are keepers and which can be sold. I'll then re-invest that money from sales back into the layouts, and in more more desirable train cars for the EVRR.
Latest video of train action on the layout - enjoy!

The layout looks great as always. The sprinkling of colour on the ground from the fallen leaves really makes the whole thing pop.

Da-Cheez - appreciate it! Yes, that was my favorite part of landscaping the layout a long time ago, and Woodland Scenics has been my go to, as their products are top-notch.
Alex - most likely.

I then proceeded to test-fit the plastic "mountainside" from the LifeLike Rock Quarry kit. Too big....
So, I trimmed it down with scissors until it fit perfectly, with enough clearance for my largest diesels.
Now, obviously, as I had to cut the plastic mountainside to fit on the layout in the first place, I will not be building the scene exactly as LifeLike planned for. The instructions went in the trash, and I began laying down some brown "dirt." I spread rubber cement on the plastic driveway first, and then sprinkled down the dirt.
I hope to work more on the quarry site tomorrow, so stay tuned.

So here's how I would do your quarry scene. Mind you this only a suggestion, and also keep in mind I'm very picky about details.
I would go on the site and find these two items.
(Images Courtesy Google)
I have a quary 5 miles to the north of my house. The key to a good quarry is big Rock piles and an old Bucyrus Erie Crane. We have several Strata quarries in our area, and they all have an old Bucyrus Erie drag bucket crane. I feel the lifelike crane would fit well in it's place.
This setup would likely cost around $50, but it would fit the 60s and 70s time period of your layout much better then the 90s era construction machinery.

Thanks for the suggestions, Aaron. I may just have to use that crane, but in the kit, there really isn't any machinery, aside from a small crane which is used to hoist buckets up the hill, some workers, a utility trailer, rocks, and signs. Not very modern, to say the least, but this crane may give it the perfect look.

There's a grader on the site for like 12 bucks including shipping. It would look good in your quarry...

Thanks Chops!
Neat idea, busss.
Aaron, alright, I'll check it out.
Moved right along with working on the quarry scene this morning before work, and I'm proud to say it is almost finished! Looks awesome in my opinion. I also "replanted" the trees, replaced some black ballast stone, and sprinkled some new orange WS foliage. The quarry really adds life to what was always a dull spot on the layout.
I plan on adding a few finishing touches to this scene, including a grader, a dump truck or 2, excavator, maybe a work pickup truck, and fencing. I am also considering removing the Tyco signal tower w. people for good, and replacing it with a new plain signal tower. If anyone wants it, let me know - would be willing to trade or sell it to a good home.

be careful of using the outside loop with 86 foot long boxcars & passenger cars as they may hit that bump

Thanks Chops!
Yeah, busss, except I will never run anything that large on the layout.

The rock quarry continues to grow in realism, with the addition of this AWESOME Woodland Scenics steam shovel (aka "backhoe") and Classic Metals "White" dump truck! I also removed the signal bridge.
I also ended up digging thru my parts cart, and found another Tyco Freight Unloading Depot which I kept for parts due to a bad motor. I removed the tractor, glued a worker onto the seat, and replaced the lame brass bulldozer I painted yellow a while ago, pushing logs at the York Sawmill & Lumber Co. BEFORE
AFTER
I also replaced the bridge on the Ephrata Valley Railroad, which had been there from the beginning of the layout, with an Atlas girder bridge. I did this because sometimes my larger diesel locomotives would have an issue on the inner line with handrails sometimes hitting the bridge, as the track there is quite tight to the bridge. This was only an issue with like 1 or 2 diesels, but I figured it was time for an upgrade. Looks good.
My next plan is to replace the "white" house in the center of town. Looks odd there... Not sure if I'll replace it with another house or put in a gas station there, replacing the pumps behind the grocery store.

Received the lot of locomotives in the mail yesterday, and unboxed them today, which also happened to be my day off. Perfect timing.
And, upon testing each one, I'm extremely happy to report that all of the locomotives are in perfect working order! Except the Tyco SD24, which unfortunately suffers from a loose pinion gear, but the PT motor is still good.
I then got to work on the C-Liners, installing new replacement horns for those missing them, and replacing shells on 2 which were duplicates; giving life to a Burlington Northern C-Liner shell I've held on to for a very long time, as well as a New Haven C-Liner shell which Chops gifted me a while ago. Now, all of these C-Liners are back to looking great, and will soon be riding the rails of the Ephrata Valley Railroad, hauling freight. In fact, I plan to collect each and every one of AHM's C-Liners, the A-units, unpowered A-units, and unpowered B-units. And, I've got a good start.
My Union Pacific C-Liner, which was featured in this week's LOTW, which I got off Ebay, is already hauling freight on the EVRR. Check out this shot, as it hauls 2 gondolas filled with stone, past the quarry, which I edited to look accurate.
