There was a nice little Model Train Shop in Altoona Pa. almost directley to the left of the turntable at the old PRR Shops, now the NS Shops but the last I was there a year ago it was gone and another business was in it's place.
Does anyone know if the Contractor who ran it has moved the shop or was it has closed up. It was a great place to pick up new and used HO items.
Thanks, Alco Fan

Buss, How do you know? The Name full steam ahead could be it. Was Neely a contractor? The shop was all trains.

I lived in Altoona for the last two years. That was one of two old shops bought by Shaffer's Full Steam Ahead, who took everything there and consolidated it into their shop across the tracks over in Greenwood (half mile away). In January they moved to their new location in the old Park Furniture building right on 4th ave within a block of the turntable, where they have three stories of space and pretty much all of it is R/C car and drone tracks, indoor and outdoor. They still have plenty of HO and N but their primary business now is R/C and drones. Not too much used equipment, but they have everything new under the sun and an incredible quantity of old detail parts. If you visit, tell Mark (the owner) that Connor says hello! (their new address is 630 N 4th Ave)
Neely's is the shop downtown on Green Ave, they deal only in Lionel, American Flyer, etc, but they sure do have a lot of it! No HO except the occasional odd thing that shows up, most of which just goes directly to me. The Neelys (Rick and Donna) are super nice folks though, and they have two cats who live at the shop, Charlie (the grey one) and Murphy (the giant one). Even if you're not an O gauge person, stop in to visit the cats!
There is one other shop all the way down Plank Road by Walmart, Keith's Country Western Emporium has HO and N stuff, but it's all new and all priced at retail. Nothing really worth bothering with. Holiday Hobbies down towards Hollidaysburg has come and gone in the space of a year and is no longer in business. Any other shops in the area you might remember were gone before I got there 2 years ago.
Antique Depot, the flea market in Duncansville, has the Alto Model Train Museum, which is a great group of folks who keep a variety of HO, S and O layouts running and open to the public. We're currently building a new HO layout, loosely resembling Horseshoe Curve and the Altoona area. Used HO equipment can be found for sale here too. Worth a visit! In addition, in the far end of the building, there's a large section of flea market tables and stuff run by a guy named Mike (tall guy, grey hair, bit of a beard, easy to find). He has several tables of HO, S, O, anything that he ends up with. I've picked through all the HO stuff to death already but who knows what's gonna show up next.
Hope this helps!

Thanks PRR4800!!! I loved that guy’s shop. Always something to look through. My homeplace is sixteen miles away I went to school and dated a girl who lived near the main entrance to the shops by the sign with the loco front. BTW that would be a neat pic to post. I may contact you for some tips if I travel back this summer. I have been to the depot in Duncansville, where I bought my first car, but they didn’t have the museum.

Happy to help! I am currently back home in Bucks County for a bit and will probably be moving out to Greensburg toward the end of the month, so if you're planning on visiting Altoona some time in July or afterward, let me know and I'll pop on over and say hi--it's no trouble, I always have plenty of business to do in Altoona while I'm there!
