Having made my first two purchases recenly, well maybe I have 4 of what I consioder "Vintage" Ho stuff*, I thought it migh be interesting to summon the TycoNauts and the bretheren to discussing say:
What is the most modern HO equipment that you would consider "vintage" NOW. Because that of course is going to change over time.
The Lionel guys consider anything from 1987 or newer as "current". I have a an "AB" set of Lionel 3 rail Alco PA's in D&H paint and Iwas going to collect them but, and it's a strong but, I think that market is over inflated and at least with HO I can run a vintage item on track I have...
So, guys...thoughts?

I would say to be "Vintage HO," the item needs to be out of production obviously...though there is something kinda instant-vintage about certain current items. The IHC SD-24 made from the TYCO tooling and the recent run of C415's and C628's from the old toolings though all-newly made are themselves rather vintage.
That Lionel date of 1987 as the cut off could apply in many respects to "Vintage HO" too. Consider that the heyday of HO-scale RTR offerings seems to start ending by about 1980 and TYCO begins shrinking its line by the late '80s...so a case could be made for going with that 1987 date too.
Great Topic! [}:)]

hi guys we here in uk put vintage at mid 70s and earlier,as after that the so called invester/collecters market started up with abundant limited editions and limited runs and the fact manufactures started to box everything thing as collectable,in other words when the last real TOY TRAINS were made, and the displaying tribe started,ie those who do not run their trains just look and them and count the rivits, not meant to upset anyone just point out how we see it,ken

To answer your question I would put it at the pre-plastic era. The other points here are valid also. You can't really nail this one down.
Vintage is a funny word, it could mean so many things.
It could mean old, but what is old?
It could refer to being classic.
It could refer to a specific year.
It could also refer to the best of. New York, New York, vintage Sinatra.
I refuse to use the word in any of my listings, it is so over used on eBay that it has lost any impact it might have had on me.

I agree. Ebay is living proof that everything is collectible and the use of the word Vintage or rare; (here come s an oxymoron) are ubiquitous!
but I do think that a Vintage period can be defined. Certainly I think that the Penn Line GG-1 I just bought is a Vintage Ho locomotive. I think anything `70's is pretty definitely. Now we get into the `80's! Is it to soon to think of that as Vintage. I think it's close but a locomotive that say Tyco brought into their line in the `70's and are still producing the same chassis/shell mold combo in the `80's you would call that Vintage as welll. Kinda like a `93 Volvo 240 Wagon. Vintage when created. but not replica's like a Mantua "Classic" 0-6-0 switcher. That's different.

As someone posted above "Vintage" is a funny word and actually means "wine age" or "year of wine". I use OOP out of production or "pre 1970" or "pre 1980" when asking about older HO. I try to never use the word "vintage" and discourage others from using the improperly used term.
As far as HO trains,Here's my take:
All TYCO is collectable since 1993 was the last catalog and the accepted end of production. It's hard to believe it's been 25 years!
All USA made Mantua before sale to Model Power now MRC.
All USA produced Athearn (Blue box) pre Horizon.
All Gilbert HO
Lionel HO before 1970.
Fleischmann HO before 1980.
Maerklin HO to 1980.
All Penn Line.
All Varney.
All Revell.
All John English / Hobbyline.
All Marx.
Your opinion may differ and that's OK!

*** Wow, this thread is bringing out our Vintage members. I want to add my way to. My way of determining Vintage is when I see some, it brings the little kid inside me out again. I would name it, being a real technical type person "really neat stuff". frank
