It is sad since he seemed healthy just two months ago.
He was at his store during the busy times at Christmas.
He became ill late December and went to the hospital.
Called a few times and his co-workers thought he would get better.
Unfortunately that was not the case.

They did say he tested negative from the virus.
I last saw him in person at the Clark New Jersey show and days later at his store.

That was back in March 2020 before the pandemic shut things down.

I did go to the store in late October but he was off that day.
I was going to see him last month but found out he was ill.

Very nice man and sad to see him gone.

The store should be okay for the near future since they still get brisk business.
The co-owner and staff care too much about their friendly business to see it disappear.

She did have a bit of train travel in her life time.
Including a ride using equipment from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

"Staten Island New York on Monday October 21 1957.

The North Shore rail line once a major transportation artery on Staten Island, had been closed for four years.

But some very special passengers had need of the railroad, so the line was re-opened for one final journey.

Those passengers? Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip died last week at the age of 99. As the world mourns and looks to his funeral this Saturday, Staten Islanders can look back at that time when the queen and her husband visited our shores, if only briefly.

Queen Elizabeth II had been crowned four years earlier, following the death of her father, King George VI.

Just 31 years old, Elizabeth was making her first visit to the United States as queen.

Arriving on Oct. 17, the monarch visited President Dwight D. Eisenhower for a state dinner at the White House in Washington, D.C., and also toured Jamestown, Va., where she helped celebrate the 350th anniversary of its founding as the first English settlement in the Americas.

The queen’s next stop was New York City, which included her train trip across the North Shore of Staten Island.

The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which owned the rail line, re-opened the railway for the queen’s journey. It was a B&O engine that brought the queen’s train from Washington to New York.

They made the connection to the borough rail link at Staten Island Junction in Cranford, N.J., and traveled over the Arthur Kill lift bridge to join the North Shore line. Apparently, Elizabeth wanted to see the New York City skyline on her journey.

North Shore residents who packed the rail route said that they saw the queen standing on a small balcony at the back of the train as it passed.

The B&O train stopped at the Staten Island Terminal facility of the Army’s New York Port of Embarkation in Stapleton.

Following that leg of the journey, the Queen and Price Philip were greeted by enthusiastic throngs as they rode in a motorcade down Bay Street toward St. George. Some Islanders recalled being given the day off from school as children so that they could catch a glimpse of the royal couple.

At St. George, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip boarded the ferryboat Lt. Samuel S. Coursen and sailed over to Manhattan, escorted by some 50 vessels, including water-spraying fireboats, on a route that took the monarch near the Statue of Liberty.

In Manhattan, the queen was feted by a ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes in Lower Manhattan and also addressed the United Nations. She was in New York City for just 14 hours.

It was the last day of Elizabeth’s first visit as queen to the United States.

And it was the last time that any passengers rode on the North Shore rail line."

I found a photo of her visit to New York.
After she got off the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad train in Staten Island.
A short car ride to the ferry boat terminal.
And a boat ride to New York City.

Definitely looks like a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad observation car.

"Queen Elizabeth with Governor William Averell Harriman of New York escorts Queen Elizabeth to her car as she arrives at Stapleton for a tour of New York City.
(1957 Press photo)

The train stopped at the Staten Island Terminal facility of the Army’s New York Port of Embarkation in Stapleton before the queen and prince rode in a motorcade down Bay Street toward St. George.

When they arrived to St. George the pair boarded the ferryboat Lt. Samuel S. Coursen and sailed over to Manhattan alongside around 50 vessels bringing the queen near the Statue of Liberty.

She was then greeted with a ticker-tape parade in Lower Manhattan and later spoke at the United Nations capping off her New York City trip at just 14 hours.

Queen Elizabeth II is accompanied by New York Governor William Averell Harriman.
Queen Elizabeth II prepares to begin a motorcade parade along Bay Street toward the Staten Island Ferry terminal in St. George on Monday October 21, 1957.
The queen had ridden along the old North Shore rail line earlier in the day."

I remember I was on vacation that week 21 years ago.
I received phone calls later from co-workers who wanted to see if I was safe.

One of my coworkers was married with her husband working near the World Trade Center.

He survived that day but died years later from cancer.

Of course so many people died and others still suffering physically and mentally to this day.

Here and in Washington and rural Pennsylvania.

Those responsible for those atrocities hopefully are having a toasty afterlife for eternity.

I was working a jitney for the railroad, assigned to a dogcatcher crew working west from COnway, PA. I remember the inbound crew we were to relieve taking forever working Canton yard, with the end result that our meeting point was pushed further and further west. We eventually met up with the train at Alliance, OH. After working overnight I went home for rest and woke up to the unthinkable. For the next week or so the MofW patrolled the railroad 24-7 looking for any sign of sabotage. All flights were grounded and it was eerie looking up at the sky and seeing no vapour trails from the planes.

THat said, We must also remember 4-19-93, the day of the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168. Terrorism is terrorism, whether the perps are foreign or domestic it is all evil. We have done a good job of rooting out the foreign terrorists, while letting the domestic problem fester.

Singer Loretta Lynn passed away this morning.

Scene from a movie based on her early life. Rest in peace.

Not to overshadow her death but the engine shown in the movie had a long career.
And the engine was on Blue Mountain and Reading property during the mid 1980s.
That is today's Reading and Northern Railroad.
Possible restoration attempts failed and she is now in California.

Not a death but very sad circumstances.

This is a situation which should have been avoided.
Curse those involved for ordering an engineer to work in dangerous conditions.

NJ Transit engineer awarded $11M after passing out in 114-degree locomotive cab

By Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

"An NJ Transit engineer who suffered career ending head injuries after passing out in a locomotive cab with non working air conditioning that reached 114 degrees in July 2020 was awarded $11.6 million dollars on Monday by a jury in a federal labor suit.

The former engineer, Scott Lupia, 47, of Denville New Jersey filed a Federal Employer’s Liability Act suit on December 27 2021 after he was ordered to operate a locomotive with a broken air conditioner on July 21 2020.

A train master recorded a temperature of 114 degrees in the cab when he reported the broken AC unit, court papers said.

He was ordered by a chief trainmaster to operate the train anyway, the lawsuit said. Refusing to take train 6659 out would have been considered insubordination and could have cost Lupia his job court papers said.

The high temperatures caused him to pass out but he was able to make an emergency radio call for help and hit the emergency brakes to stop the train in Summit, before he lost consciousness and hit his head on metal in the cab, the lawsuit said.

Federal Railroad Administration safety regulations require railroads to equip their locomotive cabs with a working air conditioning unit. The suit charged that NJ Transit violated those regulations and that as a result Lupia was injured.

Lupia suffered head injuries and underwent three surgeries and had permanent hearing loss, permanent eyesight damage and almost constant balance and dizziness difficulties due to inner ear damage, said attorney Scott Fitzgerald of Garrison, Levin-Epstein, Fitzgerald and Pirrotti.

Why didn’t he open a window? NJ Transit Operating Regulations require that an engineer’s face and head cannot be exposed to any opening of a small cab window, meaning it can’t be opened more than about one inch, the suit said.

Expert testimony at the trial also raised that question, however the locomotive, an electric powered ALP-46, generates heat during operations, which raises the temperature in the cab. Other engineers testified at the trial that opening a window creates an outflow of air which sucks in hot air from the electric locomotive motors.

An engineer at NJ Transit since 2006, Lupia can no longer work as an engineer because of his injuries. A railroad enthusiast, Lupia built model trains and wrote a book about painting and detailing model trains.

“He was a talented musician, he was a railroad buff, which is equally as sad. He loved his job,†Fitzgerald said. “I told the jury, he was literally living the dream, now it’s taken away from him.â€

NJ Transit did not respond to an email seeking a comment about the case."

Article says he enjoyed building and operating model trains.

With his injuries that would be extremely difficult to enjoy the hobby.

Those supervisors were foolish to order him to work in harsh conditions.

Shame on them.

Scott who was injured is a talented model railroader. Or was.
His injuries will affect his model train activities for the rest of his life.

"KV Models was formed in 1998 by modeler Scott Lupia. What started with a single product expanded into a large variety of products from engine details to scenic details.

As Scott continues to model he continues to add to the KV Models product line. Some of the products we offer are because of suggestions from fellow modelers. Please feel free to drop us a line and let us know what parts you need.

The name KV Models (short for Keyser Valley Models) represents the beginning of the railroad history in Scott’s family. The Keyser Valley shops of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western railroad in Scranton, Pennsylvania were where the railroading in Scott’s family began. Scott’s Grandfathers, both from Scranton, began their railroad careers there.

They were both responsible for Scott’s love of model railroading and later on, Scott’s career choice as a Locomotive Engineer. Scott has embraced his railroading heritage and carries on the railroading tradition now through the manufacturing end of the hobby in addition to the profession of Locomotive Engineer."

Final post tonight from me is this interesting interview of Scott.

Some of you will hear Tony Cook in this interview. He is an expert on model trains.

Also Tony Cook posted on here years ago.

Shame that Scott was forced to operate an engine with no air conditioning during a very hot day in July.

Injuries he substained that fateful day will curtail his enjoyment of model trains.

Jerry Springer passed away a few days ago. Funny guy with his television show and a former mayor of Cincinnati.

"RIP to the former mayor of Cincinnati who was critical in saving Union Station Jerry Springer".

The destruction (proposed) of Cincinati Union Terminal in the early 1970s was opposed by many.

One of the more effective voices was Jerry Springer! He even composed a 33 1/3 record Save the Union Terminal!!

Mr. Springer was a mayor in our fair city at one point. Local tv guy. Councilmember.

Another TV local personality Ruth Lyons also took up the cause BIG TIME.

The two of them were very effective advoctes for our Union Terminal or it may have gotten the same ill fated New York Penn Station treatment."

Too bad Jerry did not live in New York City back then.

The original Penn Station might still be here today.
But then again Cincinnati Union Station could have disappeared. A trade off.

Thomas McComas Obituary
Tom McComas, author and independent filmmaker, died on Aug. 8 in Michigan City Indiana.
He was 86.

Tom was born on April 20, 1938, in Rocky River Ohio to Elizabeth McComas and Cloral McComas.

Tom's family moved from Ohio to Wilmette Illinois when Tom was 3 and when he was 15 they moved to Lake Forest Illinois.

Tom attended Loyola High School but transferred in the beginning of his sophomore year to Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland.

Tom was a skilled athlete and played baseball and football in high school. At Georgetown Prep, Tom's record of kicking the longest field goal in the school's history still remains unbroken.

After graduation, Tom studied at Xavier University, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and earned a bachelor's degree in business. The summer after graduation, Tom played Legion Baseball in Chicago. No matter what team Tom played on, he was always the shortstop and also a powerful line drive hitter.

That summer Tom was spotted by a Pittsburgh Pirates scout, and offered a contract to play on one of their farm teams, but Tom chose a different path and joined the United States Marines.

Tom was proud of his military service, and believed those years in the Marine Corp taught him persistence, self-respect and discipline – three qualities that were essential components of Tom's approach to life.

Tom loved movies. After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Tom moved to Hollywood and worked for nine months at Desilu Productions as an assistant director. That was where he decided to become an independent filmmaker, and he moved back to Chicago and began working on "No Game Today," his opus to the Chicago White Sox and a young boy's dream of becoming a major league baseball player.

Tom's film was a success at the Chicago Film Festival, and he began producing television commercials.

Tom understood the wisdom of "find a need and fill it," when one of his clients was short of funds and paid for a commercial with Lionel Trains.

Tom played with trains as a boy, but had no idea what these trains were worth and couldn't find any information on their value. Then the idea took hold to do a book on Lionel Trains. He enlisted his good friend James Tuohy, a well-respected Chicago journalist, and the two of them formed TM Books & Video and began researching and writing what would become a six-volume set, "A Collector's Guide and History to Lionel Trains."

They became respected authorities on Lionel Trains and went on to publish numerous price and rarity guides, and in 1987 they wrote the "Great Toy Train Layouts of America" book that featured Frank Sinatra's layout among others.

Tom's love of filmmaking returned in 1988, when he made the video, "Great Toy Train Layouts of America," and traveled across the country filming the layouts in the book. People Magazine reviewed this show and later selected it as one of the top 10 videos of the year.

During the next 36 years, Tom achieved his dream and became an independent filmmaker. Tom was an auteur, and TM Books & Video was licensed by Lionel Trains, John Deere, CAT, International Harvester, Ford Motor and Boeing to make entertaining and informative special interest videos. Tom also created the popular children's series "I Love Toy Trains."

For more than two decades, Joseph Stachler was Tom's creative partner, and they created outstanding work that was enjoyed by thousands.

TM Books & Video was located on a farm surrounded by Indiana cornfields near the shores of Lake Michigan. Tom would laugh about his commute, which entailed walking from the house to his studio in a renovated barn.

His rush hour consisted of seeing two squirrels and sometimes a rabbit.

Tom loved model trains, baseball, the Chicago White Sox, the Great American Songbook, BMW motorcycles, movies, E.B. White, good writing and his 1972 BMW 3.0 CS Coupe. Loyalty to his family, friends and the beloved BMW Coupe were mainstays of his life.

Tom was quick to laugh, passionate, persistent and his wit was legendary.

In baseball terms, he always kept swinging for the fences.

Tom is survived by his wife, Charyl Lane (Havens) McComas; his former wife, Mary (Laney) McComas; his sons, Thomas William McComas Jr., Christopher Mack (Michelle) McComas and Jeffrey Charles McComas; stepson, John L. (Naz Sanders) Lane; his nephew, Marc (Eva) Devereux (great-niece and -nephew, Sophie and Oliver Devereux); sister-in-law, Kara Wetherby Schmidt; brother-in-law, Heimo Schmidt; and sister-in-law, Debra Havens (nieces, Sophia and Elisabeth). Preceding him in death was his sister, Patricia (McComas) Devereux Tillinghast, passed away in 2020; and nephew, Patrick Devereux, passed away in 2023.

In keeping with Tom's wishes, burial will be private. Condolences may be left at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, otthaverstock.com, or the TM Books & Video Facebook site.
