Finally! After decades of searching for an affordable one, I've found a decent Hiawatha. I should have it in my hands by next Friday. From what I could tell, there is little to no zinc peston this one either... I'm more actively looking for a correct baggage car and a pair of coaches. I have a lot of Gilbert HO to trade if anyone here has anything they're willing to part with...

The Hiawatha showed up and it's better than i could have ever imagined. The paint job leaves a lot to be desired so that will be the first thing to go...
The chassis was one of my main concerns. As with a lot of older Rivarossi products, these suffer from zinc pest problems. I am fortunate that this one does not show any signs of it and is as new... I did find one wheel is installed backwards in the tender truck so i will need to address that when I'm servicing it.

Its time to fix the ugliness. Stripped the Bakelite shells of the poor paint and readied them for paint.
Masked off the black on the roof and the small piece on the nose that stays black as per the original Rivarossi scheme.
I custom mixed the paint for the engine using photographs. There's variations in the originals so I'm not too concerned about being 100% on the money. Here it is after shooting the metallic silver.
Masking for the brown...

Masking for the orange...

Trimmed the RR logo and the wing tips in red as per the original model. Lightly assembled to see how it looks.
And here it is with my 70's Brass Nickel Plate Products Hiawatha... The Rivarossi model is larger than the NPP one. I still need to make the decals for it and strip the stanchions and railings but she's pretty much done.

WOW! Stupendous work!! "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven." - Matthew 5:16
Very nice restoration! Amazing to see one that hasn't crumbled apart. " Heck with counting 'em rivets, TRAINS ARE FOR FUN! Not called the Mad Scientist for nothing either!"
