Thank You, Walt!! Yeah...I seem to have a knack of collecting Tyco's best manual/powered accessories - my overall favorite has to be the Log Loader. Although the Tractor Loader (which I do not have) might score first place.

Chops, yep, here it is: (Photo credit to PicClick)

Hope you enjoyed that previous video.

Today, 3 items arrived in the mail, destined for RETRO TYCO.....

The "Brown Box Era" Burlington Route cupola caboose is perfect...and was obtained on Ebay for $9.99 - a fair price considering that this road name is somewhat harder to find...

After submitting an offer and being accepted, I got the Tyco Burlington Route red GP20 for just 16 bucks, shipped. With a little lubrication and replacing of couplers, this vintage "Geep" was running on the rails once more, and has been added to the RETRO TYCO Locomotive Collection. This is a pretty common Tyco locomotive, in my opinion, so it's about time one was preserved on my layout.

The third and final latest find is...the Tyco Freight Unloading Depot. Appearing to be mint in original box, I bought this at a decent price, only to test it today and get disappointed. :( Unfortunately, the motor inside kept getting jammed, and then when it finally began to work great, the diodes melted....and then the whole thing failed to work again. Upon removal, the motor still worked, but when just a bit of force was applied to the worm gear (simulating that of the plastic piece holding the motor in place, to turn the next gear.....the motor just stalled.)

Oh well...you win some..you lose some. At least I got another green WM flat car and 3 pipes, as well as parts to either sell or trade..or perhaps to fix another Freight Unloading Depot. I will keep searching.

My zeal for finding another Tyco green Burlington Northern 50' box car, as well as a New Haven one to dedicate specifically to RETRO TYCO, was satisfied when I purchased both in the same lot for $12, shipped. The box cars arrived yesterday, and they are in excellent condition!

Please be sure to check out the latest video under the Tyco Rolling Stock section, entitled "The Best of TYCO 50' Box Cars," which features both of these latest additions to the collection!

Two thoughts on that loader.

1/ the motor is likely to be standard so maybe can be replaced.

2/ Diodes can be replaced easily

3/ Maybe the mechanism is fouling in some way. I would start there with getting it working smoothly without the motor before doing steps 1 and 2

You may not succeed, but it has to be worth a try!

Thanks for the advice, James! I did lubricate the gear mechanism (to see if maybe the gears jamming was preventing the motor from working properly) and for about 10 seconds after that, the motor buzzed into perfect action and the little tractor was moving great...until the diodes melted out. Then, the motor would no longer work. So, I clipped off the wiring including the diodes, so that no power could be channeled through that way, and hooked up 2 wires directly from the powerpack to the motor - it still ran erratically, if at all. My last venture was to remove the motor, and test it outside of the accessory. Of course, when left to sit on the table, as soon as power was sent to it, it began working great, but as soon as you applied a bit of force to hold it down on the table, the motor stopped working, and just buzzed. :( Needless to say, despite how mint the accessory looked, the motor was not good.

Oh well....but I've bought another, that's been tested and verified to work. So, hopefully I will have no issues with this one.

UPDATES:

This morning, I removed all of the A-Team Train Set enemy soldiers and the tanks & Jeeps, in order to provide room for the Operating Freight Depot (a verified operating one) that I bought at a good price off of Ebay, on Thursday.

Also, over at the Piggyback Flatcar Set....a red Kenworth cab-over is getting maintenance (did you know that pretty much all Tyco Kenworth truck cabs flip up, exposing a Tyco-ish engine underneath.)

Thank you all - I truly appreciate it!

Chops....yes..RETRO TYCO has grown quite a bit since just last year. I am struggling with the idea of expanding - even though I know I could probably fit even more Tyco stuff on the layout if I did so, my basement is low on space...plus, I don't want my collection to get "too" out of hand.

As a matter of fact, I have not even begun collecting Tyco buildings...as I just have no room for them on RETRO TYCO. Perhaps in the future, I can build a greater, even larger version of RETRO TYCO. I would call it, RETRO TYCO II.

Very nice RP! I've just seen all the things you've acquired for Retro Tyco. I'm impressed!
For a real challenge- you could start collecting the Tyco Passenger sets. I'm not sure if you have any but Tyco produced many different ones, some of which are impossible to find like the Union Pacific and Crescent Limited sets.

Thank you very much, BnsfIA!! I truly appreciate your compliments...and challenge accepted. I actually do not have any Tyco passenger cars, at all. Thanks for the inspiration!

Today, my "2nd" Tyco Freight Unloading Depot Accessory arrived in the mail, and as expected, upon testing it with a golden powerpack, the tractor fired right up!! The one "hammering" worker was missing on this depot, so all I had to do was remove it from the first "nonworking" one I got, and glue it to this one - which worked out perfectly. Next step, installation on RETRO TYCO.

But first, I realized that not all of the hot glue spots had been removed from the rear-right corner of the layout, so I took a scraper, and worked to remove all of the glue spots once and for all....and in the process, sanded the corner of the table smooth. Then, I positioned the Freight Unloading Depot where I wanted it to go, drilled a hole for the wire to slip through, and connected yellow extension wires to the red ones connected to the accessory. Lastly, I hooked up the wires to the AC side of yet another Tyco golden powerpack, placed it on the "shelf" under the platform, turned on the power, and presto - the Tyco Freight Unloading Depot is now working well on RETRO TYCO!!!!

Stay tuned for a video featuring it in action, in the near future.

In addition, I also won an auction unopposed for this Tyco Burlington Northern Searchlight car...for just $10, shipped! It lights up great. Now I just need both the Durango Searchlight car and the GP20, and at least my Tyco Searchlight Car collection will be complete.

RETRO TYCO, as it appears today.

Who can guess my favorite piece of Tyco rolling stock? Here's a hint.

Today, I received the following from Chops as an ongoing trade....the Tyco Keystone Coal Co. tipping hopper, as well as 2 Atlas brass-rail right-turnouts.

I have been having issues with the rear right-turnout on RETRO TYCO ever since I first built the layout last year...mainly because the turnout track is as old as the hills. Because of this, trains would often lose power when running-over the turnout, and derail when attempting to run in reverse. But, after replacing it with one of the Atlas right-turnouts I got from Chops this afternoon, I'm happy to report my Tyco trains are now happily running without derailments or stalling out....and can also easily access the siding to the manual Pipe Loader while either pulling or pushing train cars backwards. Success!

I had a similar problem with a double crossover with 4 turn outs on it. The trains would stumble as they crossed over this 18 inch long piece. After a little study, I found that if the turnout rail were closed tightly, this problem went away. I am going to get electric switches to operate all of mine...

More Tyco items have been added to the collection!!

First off, I finally obtained the New Haven GG1 -- at a great price!!! This Tyco GG1 is in great shape cosmetically and operationally....but I do need 2 new couplers (broke both after this photo was taken...trying to exchange the 2 ) in order to get it hauling train cars on RETRO TYCO. SO GLAD to have one at last!

NEXT - I found this listing of "3 Tyco HO-Scale Locomotives" on Ebay...and upon looking closely, I realized that really only 1 locomotive out of the 3 was a Tyco, the other 2 being a LifeLike and Athearn respectively. Nevertheless, I was drawn to that Tyco Santa Fe "Yellow Bonnet" and after sending in an offer, was accepted, and purchased the lot for only $30.75, a steal considering the unit price of each locomotive was only $10.

So....I recognized that Tyco "Yellow Bonnet" F9A to be the harder-to-find version with the BLUE decal on the nose, as opposed to the YELLOW decal used on later F9's. This "Freight Warbonnet" F9 was released in 1974, and apparently wasn't produced for long, because both it and the later variant with the YELLOW nose decal are fairly uncommon pieces.

After cleaning the shell and lubricating the gears, this Tyco "Yellow Bonnet" F9A was running well once again!! I do plan to add it to the Ephrata Valley Railroad roster, as opposed to RETRO TYCO, since the EVRR roster already contains the other 2 Tyco Santa Fe "Freight Warbonnets."

Below is a photo of the big three Santa Fe "Freight Warbonnet" variants....completing my collection, for now.

Lastly, today the Santa Fe "Yellow Warbonnet" C430 arrived in the mail, and after light cleaning, lube, and replacement of both couplers, this scarce C430 is now proudly displayed and operated on RETRO TYCO. I'm overjoyed to now have one....been searching for a good price on this Tyco ALCO for a long time now...and while this one is not "mint" cosmetically, it is still awesome for 17 bucks.

Racking up a fine herd of yellow Warbonnets! Just the other month I
saw a GP something in the old Warbonnet with a small BNSF patch
on the door. It appeared to doing some local work. Nice vid, that
GG1 looks good in revenue service. Surprised the door on that ore wagon
actually opens- this is a departure from all the other operating ore
cores, I see.

Further Tyco SCORES!

Got the following cars all from the same seller, at extremely cheap prices. And these cars are not easy to find either...

Union Pacific RR gondola w. 4 Nite Glow pipes = $6.39 (this makes 2 in my collection so far.)

Chef Boyardee harder-to-find "Italian Style Foods" variant = $3.25

"Red Box Era" Rock Island flat car = $2.51

Being the flat car with pipe load fanatic that I am, I just had to do this....

To then add the Rock Island flat car to the other fellow pipe cars on one of the sidings on RETRO TYCO.....

Both of my UP gondolas with 8 total Nite-Glow pipes, rest in front of the Crane Loader.

And the 2 variants of Tyco's Chef Boyardee promo 50' box car -- both now a part of my collection! The one on the right is the most popular, and the first I obtained.

Please enjoy RETRO TYCO ACTION #8.

Yes, that Rock Island flat car is quite the piece, and quite the addition to any collection.

Thanks, Chops!! Indeed it is.

So, besides the Canadiana 50' box car (posted in COTW) that arrived in the mail yesterday and is destined for the RETRO TYCO collection....what else has been obtained?

First, 2 "Red Box Era" staples -- blue Santa Fe stock car & Morrell's Pride reefer. Both for $12 total.

And....*drumrollllllllllll*.....the hard to find Rock Island flat car with the 3 authentic TYCO LONG RED PIPES!!!! At $13, this deal is now another "check" on my mental "Most Wanted Tyco" list. SO Cool.

I also re-organized a row of 4 shelves formerly filled with LEGO's...to make more room for special Tyco sets and cars preserved in the RETRO TYCO collection.

Love the layout, just proves what can be done with Tyco and not spend a ton of money building a model railroad. Tyco had a great idea back then, mixing play value like Lionel did in O scale, with HO scale trains. Those operating accesories are the bomb. Keep up the great work!!!! Mike

Hey RP,

Love the Retro Tyco and am interested in doing something similar. I want to make it very simple and kid friendly for my little ones. Anyhow, 2 questions (and I'm sure many more after that): 1) Is your track attached to the plywood (and if so, how)? Are your manually operating accessories attached to the plywood?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Thanks!! First of all, my track is not fully attached to the plywood (only in some spots it is, using Hot Glue) -- I guess you could say I went unconventional there. Secondly, none of my accessories (manual or powered) are attached to the plywood, as I wanted to ensure that the accessories could be moved at a later time if desired.

Yesterday, I visited A.C. Moore and picked up the following strings of black beads....that greatly resemble the beads Tyco used as gravel, gold, and coal in their accessories. Since the original Tyco beads are difficult to find, I am using the following with my Tractor Loader, until the real coal beads can be found cheap.

Here are some shots of RETRO TYCO, as it appears now.

Wow...I can't believe it has been over a month since I last updated this thread......

Up until yesterday, there had been nothing new added to RETRO TYCO - that is, until I spotted a new listing for MIB Tyco Piggyback Tractor Loader & Unloader, on Ebay. I submitted an offer, and ended up buying this accessory for $30, shipped - a fair price considering that it is in mint condition and in its original box. Can't wait to add it to RETRO TYCO!

I might even have to expand RETRO TYCO....so stay tuned.

Nice find R P. As much as I like to paint and detail buildings I still pick up these operating accessories when I can find them.

Nice item Robert. I had that one many decades ago with the Santa Fe trailers.
Thrown out long ago but never forgotten. You should have many hours of fun with your item.

Yet another Tyco accessory I did not know existed: the forklift and
trailer truck combo. Great find on the "coal," I remember using the
granulated stuff back in the day, and being amazed how it seemed
to travel by magic to every point on the layout.

Thanks Chops!! I agree, the "coal" beads are great, and the Piggyback Loader & Unloader seems to be quite an awesome accessory.

Microbusss...that's a shame....I hope you'll be able to find one cheap for parts, to salvage the controller.
