(Don't get a Sanka Hopper yet...)
Great to see all those purely Tyco vintage pieces running like new. What are your plans for ground cover? Did Tyco make a grass mat? I believe LL did, back in the day.
On one of my earlier Tyco layouts I used an old recipe using Ritt dye and free sawdust sweepings from a hardware store (they thought I was nuts) to make my own grass. Trick is to really let the sawdust soak for like a week before drying it out so the color binds.

(DON'T get a Sanka Hopper, yet...)
Great to see all those vintage pure Tyco pieces running like new. It would really make a hit if you can ever find the time, and a pick up truck, to take it to an exhibition. A LOT of model railheads got their start in Tyco.
What are your plans for ground cover? I know LL made a grass mat of sawdust back in the day, but Tyco? But then, I never knew they made tunnels, either.
On one of my first Tyco layouts I used an old recipe from the '50's for sawdust grass using Ritt Dye. The trick is to let the sawdust (free from a hardware store) soak for about a week to make sure that it binds properly. Too short a time, and it will fade out quickly.

Yeah, I've had a distinct feeling not to seek a Sanka Hopper since our latest trade was completed.
I've been doing some research on the "Brown Box Resource" site....and it appears that Tyco did make some green felt mats within their Track Layout Expander sets...but I think it is highly unlikely that if I do ever obtain an Expander set that I'll pry up all the track and lay down the mats. Also, in keeping RETRO TYCO 99% Tyco....I do not really want to use any other products, so the basic plywood "pike" look will just have to do for now.
I do have plans to search for Tyco signs/lights in the future...to add throughout the layout. It appears that they made quite a few, but these days, they are getting scarcer. so I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for deals on such accessories.
What I find to be interesting is that although Tyco produced Operating Layouts with trees and other scenery on them..they never actually offered such scenery as separate products. :( Or did they?

From my understanding, the layouts produced were mostly for store displays (like Lionel layouts), Tyco themselves did not make scenery products, and most likely acquired them from the likes of Life Like or another company.

With Tyco, learn something new all the time. I notice that the twice around has its spur turnout stuck under the tunnel. Never a bright idea. Also interesting that for a display module, it is bereft of any Tyco accessories and structures.

Hello everyone! Sorry for "disappearing" for the past 2 weeks - my life has been immensely busy between school (I've had 3 AP Classes this semester) and working part-time on weekends, greatly hampering my ability to run trains. It peaked with having a Unit Test and Extra Assignment both due last Friday and a Semester Project due this Tuesday....all for my AP Calculus Class. :(
Nevertheless, next week is Finals and thankfully the 1st semester of Senior Year is finally winding down.
So, back to RETRO TYCO, here are some of the latest additions:
I don't believe I had shared this prior under this thread, however, here is the Tyco Sanka covered hopper that I received as a gift from Chops!! Thanks man - this car is awesome!

Next, a Ralston Purina High-Cube box car with Tyco's "chug-chug" mechanism. I won this one on Ebay several weeks ago for a couple bucks.

About 2 weeks ago, I successfully obtained a gem in Tyco Collecting........and something I've been seeking for a VERY long time....THE BUBBLE YUM BOX CAR!!!! I was lucky to win this one over several bidders for a little over $20.00, with shipping....in its original box. I'm so excited to finally have the 50' Bubble Yum Box car, and it will be featured in a video that I taped this afternoon and hope to publish this evening. Please stay tuned!

Interesting, thesiding. It'd be great if someone has a photo of those actual displays...as opposed to merely the catalog images.

Been focusing on the Ephrata Valley Railroad for the past month or more, but today, I decided to get back to RETRO TYCO....
Locomotive Restoration: Tyco "Red Box Era" Burlington Route Alco C430
Despite attempts to get rid of my Tyco Santa Fe "Warbonnet" C430, I ended up keeping it in my parts cart for over a year, along with a Tyco Burlington Route C430 shell I obtained on Ebay some time last year, or perhaps in 2017. Today, out of nowhere, I got the drive to use parts from the Santa Fe C430 to make the Burlington Route Alco functional.
After replacing couplers, swapping trucks, weight, plastic cab "glass," and installing the wired lightbulb into the Burlington shell, as well as adding all lights and numberboards, I fired up Burlington Route C430 #4301 on RETRO TYCO, and success! The light bulb works, and the engine runs smoothly.
This is the 1st Red Box Era Tyco locomotive preserved on RETRO TYCO.

I lubed the gears with Liberty Oil and installed new traction tires. I hope to capture a video of it operating on RETRO TYCO soon, so stay tuned!
So, why did I store the seemingly perfect Burlington C430 shell for so long? Because, when I first obtained it, I hoped to power the shell, add handrails, and place it into service on the Ephrata Valley Railroad. However, I then noticed that 3 of the 4 cylinder-shaped handrail holders located at the bottom of the front & rear of the locomotive were broken off, thus eliminating the possibility of handrail installation. Leaving the shell for parts, I never thought of rejuvenating it for preservation on RETRO TYCO -- where it can run without handrails -- until today.

I restored an operating log dump car last week, out of 3 total I got in a lot of other Tyco stuff, under 2 years ago at this point. I believe 3 of the "tabs" to hold the logs were snapped-off on this car -- I simply glued tabs from the other cars onto this one using Modeler's Cement. The final result looks great.

In taking a brief hiatus from the Ephrata Valley Railroad, I've returned to RETRO TYCO and am pleased to announce the latest Tyco finds!
Up first, 2 Tyco slot cars - a Porsche and Lamborghini Countach:

Next, the hard to find Arm & Hammer 50' box car. Final price on Ebay (including shipping) was about $9.

Also, I obtained a partial Tyco G.I. Joe train set on Ebay, for $24. What I was truly interested in preserving (besides the train) were the helicopter and troop transport boat (both of which are in mint condition with original stickers!!) Now, all I need is a tanker with stickers on both sides, another Special Forces gondola (this one unfortunately has a broken step-ladder, and the switchers (I'm striving to get both of the 2 different versions, which would be great.) For the time being, here's a seller's photo of the lot that recently arrived.

Plus, in last week's Nicholas Smith Train Store visit, I found the following Tyco gems--
Santa Fe "Warbonnet" Plymouth switcher (with MU-2 style motor), and in perfect shape. $20.

Tyco "Red Box Era" Boston & Maine RR blue hopper, w. original box (these seem to be a little scarcer than say Tyco's UP or Virginian hoppers.) $6.

Burlington Northern RR Piggyback car w. yellow Kenworth. $10.

Operating Box Car (missing the track and presto-matic button) -- THE CAR WORKS!! $7.

Which, by the way, caused me to create a "universal" dump site on RETRO TYCO; where the Ore Dump Car, Log Dump Car, and Operating Box Car can all be used.

And, the latest Ebay score -- the Stokley 50' box car. A bit pricey at $17, but it is in great shape, so.

Did I do good?

Please see the post above for some of the most-recent additions to RETRO TYCO.

On Monday, I stumbled across a NEW Ebay buy-it-now listing for the Tyco Transformers Train Set, and snagged it for $50, shipped!! The lot just arrived today, and I'm pleased to share my photos of this awesome find:
The set includes the switcher and all train cars in mint condition, with all stickers applied well by the former owner!! Also, I believe I got all of the "Auto-bots" that were made by Tyco specifically for the Transformers Train Set as part of the purchase! Overall, I'm overwhelmed to have, as I put it, preserved yet another piece of Tyco history.
Here's the switcher:

The radar dish pops up, and one side panel, when lifted, reveals some control board circuitry.

The coal gondola transformers into a turret-gun train car!

The box car unfolds into an intricate command center!

and my favorite - the caboose transforms into a rocket ship!

Personally, I believe Tyco really did a great job on this train set, and put quite a bit of detail into the tooling, right down to the single-European style trucks and oddly-shaped knuckle couplers. Just WOW!!

You are right - the Special Forces gondola was included in the Rambo set, but also in the G.I. Joe set. The box art shows the gondola having a "G.I. Joe" label, but that was inaccurate. In fact, the train set in both the Rambo and G.I. Joe sets was identical (with the exception of the Mehano switcher sometimes included by Tyco in the G.I. Joe sets.) http://ho-scaletrains.com/tycos-g-joe-train-set/
You have the Rambo set - awesome!!

RP, I declare you got a pure Tyco Mini Museum going there. I don't know anyone else, anywhere, who has done what you have done here with pure Tyco. That Transformer Train is remarkable. I have a few spare Transformer car parts, should you, or anyone else out there have need of them. I am still looking for the C-Liner. It is MIA.

Any idea what the background is on the European trucks they put on that set? Was tooling made by Tyco specifically for that set, or did they source parts from someone else? I've always found it to be an interesting design choice.

quote:Any idea what the background is on the European trucks they put on that set? Was tooling made by Tyco specifically for that set, or did they source parts from someone else? I've always found it to be an interesting design choice.

I'm not entirely sure about the background on the European trucks that Tyco used...except that the tooling was purely Tyco. These European trucks were also used on the M.A.S.K. Train Set train cars.

Sad to report that in the past couple days of usage, the PT motor in my Tyco Transformers switcher has begun smoking.....we shall see if it works again miraculously, like my A-Team Shark.
Realized that I haven't taken an overview shot of RETRO TYCO in a little while...so here it is!

TYCO ROAD&RAIL #3 - featuring a "Midnight Special" Sharknose hauling a short Tyco-train-set style freight train, while a Porsche and Red Dump Truck race on the elevated slot track. Enjoy!

Great suggestion, microbusss! I will implement that in the next "RETRO TYCO ACTION" video, so stay tuned!

Well....RETRO TYCO is 98% Tyco (only the slot and railroad track are not entirely Tyco). Still, I still consider it to be a Tyco Purist layout.
Your layout is awesome too, walt!! What I most admire about it is the fact that you took the time to carefully install both slot track and railroad track side-by-side to create realism.

Your Tyco layout is awesome RP and it's soo nice to see someone do the exclusive Tyco thing. Everything on my layout is either something I had one of on my early to mid 1970's layout or something I wish I had at that time but didn't have the funds to buy... I have one trailer terminal that is the original one I had back then, with a fresh coat of paint...

Thanks walt - I truly appreciate it!! I think it's great that your layout is composed of your model railroading memories from your past - including actual features of previous layouts.

FINALLY obtained a Tyco Kenworth cabover slot truck!!! This blue striped version was won at a good price on Ebay, and with a new "used" set of rear tires, is working well on RETRO TYCO's "Tyco Speedway."

Check out the following video of it, and another one of my Tyco slot trucks, in operation.

Today, a shipment of 26 Tyco slot track guardrails arrived in the mail which were obtained on Ebay...so tonight after work, I was determined to install them on RETRO TYCO's "Tyco Speedway." About 30-45 minutes later....

I used 23 guardrails in all (that's including the ones I had to cut in order to splice guardrails onto the front-side of the power-slot-track.
Just to test out their effectiveness, I raced my black w. flames Peterbilt and yellow Lamborghini around the slot track at the highest possible speed, and although the truck eventually slipped out of the slot, it did not go flying off the track as before, but was saved by the guardrail. Success (and a dream come true)!
